funthing29 wrote:The best word I can use to describe this film is intense. Yes it is long but I think that helps the story in the sense that the audience experiences the same journey as the parents by waiting in anticipation to find out what happens. It is one of those thrillers that is gripping, well-acted and successfully ratchets up the tension til the end. I especially liked the way it jumped between scenes so left the audience to fill in some the gaps. 8/10.
Spot on synopsis funthing29, good job

I got to Islington 15mins before the start time (late and wasn't expecting to get a decent seat. Managed to find a seat at the back which happened to be next to Beat's OH. Nice to see you guys again.
I thought the film was pretty good but it was kind of creepy and uncomfortable to watch, I'm sure intentionally. Jake acting was good but I hated the way they dressed him, tight shirts with the top button done up and his nervous ticks. It made for a better character, just didn't enjoy seeing Jake looking so weird. Hugh also gave a good performance although I would have liked to see more of the survivalist in him. It was very intense heightened by the silence that themed throughout the movie. The last few minutes of the film was highly predictable and could have made it harder to connect the dots but overall I'd definitely recommend this.

Sorry but if someone scrunched a pack of crisp on my watch it would be the hot shower treatment and no mistaking!
LondonCityNights wrote:Absolutely outstanding. This is a direct riposte to the torture apologism of Zero Dark Thirty.
How can it be a riposte when
not only is the torture unsuccessful but it gets the torturer in to the exact same predicament?
Zero Dark Thirty ends up condoning torture as an unpleasant necessity, something that brave men and women have to do 'for the greater good'.
Prisoners shows torture as unpleasant and utterly pointless,
utterly demolishing the 'ticking time bomb' argument. In torturing Alex, Hugh Jackman becomes precisely what he despises in the world: the abuser of a kidnapped child.
I thought the torture in Zero Dark Thirty
ultimately didn't lead anywhere and also ended up destroying the torturer's character but maybe I'm misremembering that movie.
I was ready to dismiss your theory but reading your full review it does offer some justification for the presence of the boxes of snakes so I'm on board

As soon as the lights go down you hear the rustle of plastic tesco bags being opened (other bags are available) Why can't they put the goodies in a cotton bag for life. One pair of ladies that sat next me to me were eating doritoes and dips! I realised this when they dropped the glass jar!

preferred locations Shepherds Bush, Westfield, Notting Hill, Central London, Wimbledon, Islington, Wandsworth thanks

Nah, the torture in ZDK categorically does eventually lead to Bin Laden: here's an article about it.

and uh, should you be interested here's my review of Zero Dark Thirty. I was a bit worked up when I wrote it:

it was the type of film that leave you with a talking point of poetic justice (but you just want to know if Hugh makes it as well) in three words : intense, gripping and frustrating

Excellent movie. Despite the two and a half hour duration, time flew as the film was so engrossing, with a permanent tension that never yielded for a moment. Credit to all the actors for superb performances and an ending that I did not expect. One of my favourite thrillers of the year.
