Re: Oranges and Sunshine
I love Syd's insert into elski's Free Films post.
Shame there are no more tickets, a Q&A would have been nice for this film, but then again I do have a corporate do that night.

Oranges and Sunshine

Directed by Jim Loach.
Starring: Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham.
Plot: The story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals of recent times: the deportation of thousands of children from the United Kingdom to Australia.
Almost single-handedly, against overwhelming odds and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited thousands of families, brought authorities to account and drew worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. Children as young as four had been told that their parents were dead, and been sent to children's homes on the other side of the world. Many were subjected to appalling abuse. They were promised oranges and sunshine: they got hard labour and life in institutions.

Re: Oranges and Sunshine
This is also going to be a Picturehouse members' preview on Sunday 27th March.
There was a big article about the film in yesterday's Evening Standard, maybe someone can find the link.

Re: Oranges and Sunshine
A very enjoyable yet thought-provoking film for a Sunday morning. Quite harrowing yet non-graphic in nature. I'd have liked it to have been longer and to have more of an ending. THere apeared to have been some loose ends and wrongs not righted. Having said that it is a real life story. Was it just me that noticed that Len wore the same clothes throughout in Australia? Lol.

Re: Oranges and Sunshine
yes same clothes! I was wondering whether it was to remind us that they only had a single pair of shoes and dress/clothe when they were kids at the brother's?
For me, the movie did not really do it... no amazing acting, no remarquable picture, nothing really to remember... the story of course, but here again something was missing for me; I agree with Stuartboy, they should have made it little longer and get a proper ending! What was the idea behind the migration? (did I miss it, did they explain???)
6.5/10
Edit: anybody in Clapham was also very much annoyed by the person wrapping and wrapping stuff (4th row from the back I think), and the sound from the movie next door!!!!
WTF was that! I think it was my first time in screen 3... bad experience!

Re: Oranges and Sunshine
Greenwich Picturehouse was rammed this morning, even despite the clocks having gone forward an hour. We found a new FMUKer next to us, canadian_turtle, and hottips was there too. I think I liked the film even more the second time round - Margaret Humphreys really is an amazing woman, and it was lovely to see that she seemed to have a happy marriage that didn't crumble under all the stress, because her husband was incredibly supportive in every way he possibly could.
