Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
I've seen "The Killer" and thought it was ace. John Woo is one of my favourite directors, he's just such a virtuoso director when it comes to action flicks.

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
Yeah but its a pity that he started making American films which were on the whole vastly inferior to his Hong Kong work. But he's not to blame as the way the events rolled for most Hong Kong stars and directors when Hong Kong was released back to China. Thats why I think Donnie Yen is a hero as he has kept the Hong Kong film industry alive (alright not singled handedly). You must check out his films such as IP Man and the classic Iron Monkey (have you seen that?)

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
Yeah, I did really mean in his earlier Hong Kong days. Isn't Face/Off supposed to be one of the few exceptions? MI:2 and Hard Target certainly convinced me to stay with the more homely, earlier stuff from Woo. I think it's really the trouble with translation. I was looking at reviews of Hard Boiled on amazon and one of the DVDs that I considered but didn't b*y was a dubbed version, which just sounded silly with some of the lines they said.
I haven't seen Iron Monkey yet, no. I haven't explored the Asian genre extensively yet mostly down to the fact that the DVDs are expensive/rated 18 so I have to get someone to get me an amazon voucher so I can send them to myself, bypassing my mother etc etc... yeah. It's complicated.
But I have heard of Donnie Yen, and I have to say I'm incredibly tempted to b*y one of his DVDs now. I think just the general artistic flair and attention to detail is what really draws me to Asian cinema; not every film is like that but the ones that are some of the most beautiful things ever committed to celluloid.

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
Has anyone been able to catch "Working Girls" on BBC3? I stumbled across it on the iPlayer as I do not have BBC3. And no, I am not talking about the 80s comedy with Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver. This is a programme intent on making chavvy, workshy girls who live off the Bank of Mum and Dad, work for a week (only, it should be longer). I have NEVER seen such lazy, ungrateful females before in my life. My mouth stood open during the first episode. These girls fly in the face of everything centuries of women have ever done for womankind. The programme didn't go into detail why exactly these girls were so averse to the working world, and while some of them may have been told by teachers that they were stupid, ultimately I think it's the parents' responsibility to make sure their kids aren't a burden to society, and not just give them money to go to beauty salons instead.
But while I am aware that there was probably a lot of editing and behind-the-scenes wangling involved, the tranformation in these girls has been remarkable. One girl, red-dyed hair, constantly chewing gum and with an attitude problem the size of Essex, was asked to help with art work for a launch of some sort, and her drawings were so beautiful that everyone was in raptures and put them on the official flyers. And see how she could smile all of a sudden! Nothing nicer to see those girls thaw up and transform, although call me cynical, but it will probably take more than one week somewhere to make them change completely.
Compulsory viewing for me.

The Shawshank Redemption. Sobering, but a wonderful tale of hope and freedom.

I've watched the fisrt two episodes of Boardwalk Empire, which I have recorded, and it looks very promising. I'm going to watch two more episodes tonight and decide whether or not to stick with it. Is anyone else watching it?

I've seen the whole series and I would definitely recommend you stick with it!andrews wrote:I've watched the fisrt two episodes of Boardwalk Empire, which I have recorded, and it looks very promising. It is a bit slow to get going and there are a lot of storylines, but I promise you, it really comes into its stride a few episodes in. One of the best shows to come out of the US in recent years, IMO, and worth the huge budget they spent on production. I strongly recommend you keep watching!
