Re: One Day
Used a voucher to see this and the audience was made up mostly of tween girls. *shudders*
This is quite a poor adaptation of the book. The story is so superficial and the audience never really grasps the deep bond between Emma and Dexter. The film skims over key moments in the book and characters are reduced to cameos or removed altogether.
Dexter's alcoholism and breakdowns (in the middle and end of the book) don't have the impact they should and therefore Emma's withdrawal from his life seems extreme. The twist at the end was handled well and had the same shock factor as it did in the book.
The leads perform well and they have good chemistry and sexual tension but I don't think their relationship evolves the way it should.
Hathway's accent was absolutely atrocious. It is mostly posh with the occasional Northern twang thrown in which just makes her sound ridiculous. I actually found it quite distracting. Another thing I found bizarre was Emma's wardrobe; she seems to wear the same outfits despite huge gaps in the timeline and changes in fashion.
I really loved the book. It had genuine moments of comedy which made me laugh which has not translated well here. The book also brought me to tears as I had became attached to the two characters but they just don't resonate with the audience in the film version. Disappointing.

Re: One Day
Just back from seeing this with a voucher. There were some great trailers beforehand too, Jane Eyre, Crazy Stupid Love, Friends With Benefits & I Don't Know How She Does It. There were far more laughs (and crying) for this than for Change Up yesterday and as I was leaving I noticed that the audience had been a complete mix of sexes and ages from teenager to pensioner and it looked like most had enjoyed it too, clearly some were fans of the book.
I really enjoyed this and unspoiled from not having read the book I had nothing to compare it to and no expectations which probably helped. I had no problems with her accent either. Mine tends to vary in the same way, my scottish accent, which was never very strong, has all but gone now but if I visit scotland or talk to someone scottish for a while it little bits start to return and then fade away again. And now, having lived in yorkshire so long, I've probably picked up a bit of an accent but not so that I can tell myself. Most likely I've got the very same 'atrocious' accent it's going to make me feel more self-concious now if people think that's a bad accent.
I also still have clothes that I had 20 years, I possibly don't wear them anymore but I do wear clothes from the last 10 years so I don't think that's out of place especially as the character wasn't into 'fashion' and didn't have a great deal of money.
So basically if you're picky about accents or a massive fan of the book maybe it's not for you but otherwise it's really enjoyable.

Re: One Day
I went to see this yesterday afternoon as I had a day off. I read the book last year, and enjoyed it so much I read it in just 'one day'. I had been really excited at the prospect of a film version, but had become a bit less enthused after seeing a lot of negative comments.
I thought that the film skipped really quickly through the early years, which I thought made the relationship between Dexter and Emma quite superficial. I thought Dexter was fleshed out far more than Emma, although I didn't particularly feel that I knew either of them very well at all. I think the film really missed out from the lack of internal monologues found in the book.
I wasn't too bothered about the accents or the clothes. I was less distracted by all of that than I expected to be.
I cried at the end. But I think when I examine why, it's less to do with my feelings towards the two characters in the film and more to do with my own feelings about how I would react if I lost my lover. I just don't think that I had much empathy or interest in the characters, which is a real shame because when I cried at the book I was crying buckets for the two characters, their lost opportunities, and the future they might have had.
Overall I think it was a watchable film, but probably enjoyed more by people that haven't read the book.

Re: One Day
Yeah and it's written by David Nicholls who has written the screenplay. I've entered several comps for goodie bags that include the book and hoping to win one of them (just google for them) as that's the only type of comp they ran for this.annabrett wrote:does the book have the same title, might check it out, who is it by?

Re: One Day
Just got back from a half full Cineworld to see 'One Day'. After reading the reviews, the film was better than expected. Ann Hathaway's accent, well it verged on a bit of Yorkshire and a bit of Irish, but did not detract from the film.
The sound track was beautiful, am off to search and find out what the music was; stayed until the end of the credits, but so many songs/music that it was difficult to make a mental note.
The film's story, well I think I have seen something like it before, but cannot remember what. I suppose nearest I can get to it is James Nesbitt and Helen Baxendale's characters in Cold Feet, but that isn't half the story.
Be very interested to see what others think of the film, if they go and see it.

Re: One Day
I loved the book & liked the film. Went to see it yesterday & wasn't sure what to expect after all the negative reviews but it really was fine, very watchable. My OH on the other hand who hasn't read the book said it was good & trust me this is actually high praise!
I agree with the previous comments, their characters aren't as developed in the early stages of the film & their relationship comes across a bit superficial due to this.
I'd give it 7/10.
