The Ides of March
Re: The Ides of March
Saw this at very packed Greenwich this morning and really enjoyed it. Ryan Gosling gives another superlative performance. He is four for four in my book this year for great films. George Clooney has more of a supporting role but is also very impressive. The direction is first rate as well, loved two scenes in particular.
The press conference scene with Gosling using the mobile phone especially the POV from Clooney and use of sound.
Also the scene where Philip Seymour Hoffman is told his fate in the car at the end. No dialogue, but everything is conveyed perfectly. ]
Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman are always good value and both turn in their usual excellent performances.
Surprised at some of the mediocre reviews this has been getting as I thought this was very good.

Re: The Ides of March
This must have been the day for delays. We were the first at PH Greenwich to start the queue outside at 10.20am, started chatting to someone and when we turned around there was an almighty queue! Canadian_turtle, a_person and MrG joined us not long after. I got a text from PXC when we were already in our seats asking us to reserve 4 seats but that was simply not possible as it filled up so quickly. I managed to keep the seat next to us and gave it to hdaniel82 upon her arrival. I saw cliveas sneaking in just when it started at about 10.20am, which annoyed me greatly (the late start, not him sneaking in) because all those trailers weren't necessary, nor was it necessary for the lights to be switched off in the room so people were groping their way blindly to seats, nor was it necessary to have to sort the projection out at the start of the film (sound but no picture for a few minutes). I feel a complaint coming on.
Film was greatly enjoyed by OH and myself, all the actors were top class. I feel though that the clever title was never really explained to the audience so for those of you who do not know what it symbolises, the Ides of March are both another name for the 15th March in the Roman calendar (day of the election in the film I believe) and for the day Julius Caesar was murdered in the Roman senate by a group of conspirators ("Et tu, Brute!")

Re: The Ides of March
I've already sent my complaint email off to Luke. That was some proper bullshit this morning. The bloody cinema redeems your printout for actual tickets. How the hell could they manage to cock-up the amount of available seats like that? And to delay the start to try to find seats for latecomers was a joke. Once it does start we get... adverts. Picturehouse and their damn adverts. If you're gonna screw the ticketing up and began the film late, drop the adverts. Just play the f**king feature.

Re: The Ides of March
Whatever gave you that idea? Screenings are usually over-allocated as not everyone turns up. And yes, a minimum of 15 minutes before is advisable - 30 minutes would be better.h2n wrote:Unfortunately, didn't get in as they ran out of seats.. although I thought that showfilmfirst allocates the exact amount of seats, so a bit confusedcanadian_turtle wrote:Greenwich was entirely full (I think it's the first time I see a PH Greenwich screening full!)![]()
But I guess it didn't help that I got there at 11.03, from now on will get to screenings 15min before!
Re: The Ides of March
Beware the Ides of March (March 15th) was the warning given to Julius Caesar by the soothsayer. And of course the Ohio primary was being held on March 15th. Nice to have a clever title and intelligent film!Beate wrote:I feel though that the clever title was never really explained to the audience so for those of you who do not know what it symbolises, the Ides of March are both another name for the 15th March in the Roman calendar (day of the election in the film I believe) and for the day Julius Caesar was murdered in the Roman senate by a group of conspirators ("Et tu, Brute!")

Re: The Ides of March
Free films are always over subscribed so its best to get there about 20 mins early just to be sure. LOL. Picturehouses make you exchange your SFF printouts for proper tickets, unless you have a members' printout with a barcode on it, which they can scan at the screening room entrance.valda wrote:err, we just walked up the stairs and sat downsoonforgotten wrote:I've already sent my complaint email off to Luke. Re: The Ides of March
Absolutely loved this, one of the best films I have seen this year!! Great story with plenty of intrigue and twists and turns and very well paced. All of the actors/actresses were great and honestly couldnt find a flaw to this film (except that it finished too soon for my liking!)
I dont think I will be able to look at Ryan Gosling without thinking he looks like George Clooney now thanks to those movie posters! Never ever thought that before!

Re: The Ides of March
Was at a packed Clapham PH. In my top 3 films of the year (along with Senna and The Devil's Double).
The phone call from Ryan Gosling to George Clooney was just sublime...
