Glad to see I was not the only one who has been fooled by Emil Lager... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3007560/

(thanks to kk for pointing out to me who the lookalike was!)
Spoilsport! Haha.
Wow! Talkabout lookalikes though. What a resemblance. I was fairly sure that Depp plays in a band and is thus musically inclined which is what persuaded me; that and him being credited for producing.
I stand corrected.
Thanks C.

I saw this today using Orange Wednesday, does that count as half a free film?

I was pretty underwhelmed really.

Paris was very well rendered, but was it really that much better than what we've seen before, ye old London in Sherlock Holmes or even Roland Emmerich's Stratford upon Avon in Anonymous.

The 3D works well within the bowels of the clock and train station, but I'd read about the ghosting beforehand and noticed it quite a bit, so yet again the 3D distracted me and took me out of the story, the exact opposite of the promised immersive experience.

The Hugo part of the story felt quite slight and seemed just a way to get into the birth of cinema and boy did it get into that, it felt like a BBC4 documentary at times - all interesting stuff, but not plonked into the middle of a movie. And some of the homages felt a bit clunky, here's the famous clip of Harold Lloyd on a clock and here's Hugo doing the same thing later on against green screen.

As others have said I'm not sure what the audience is, I found it interesting because I find cinema interesting, not because of the story and unfortunately for something that seemed to be celebrating the magic of movies in lacked that certain sparkle for me.

Saw this today at odeon covent garden as it was like the only place showing for the time i was available. Boy was it expensive! no wonder i haven't been there since 2002!
As for the film, really amazing and easily the best use of 3d this year and maybe ever? Sacha Baron Cohen was excellent! Here's my full review:

I didn't get a chance to see this before leaving for my Christmas break, does anyone know if it's still showing somewhere in London?

this was splendid. a solid 10/10...but whio is the intended audience? It was a bit deep and slow paced for kids.

Nevertheless a well judged fantasy movie. I think the best 'fantasy' movies are those that bridge and meld reality and fantasy so well that you are initally unsure what is fantasy and what is real, so that the fantasy and reality 'echo' or 'reflect' each other - and this film does it perfectly. Instead of handing out huge chunks of baseless unbelievable CGI with a badly written plot, it opts for small chunks of steampunksque fantasy interwoven into a story thats I am guessing is part of real history (the film making guy and his lost movies)? I shall investigate... google is my friend.....

oh, that kid actor is marvellous, the boy I mean. Hitgirl was great too as his mousey, keen eyed companion, it struck me that she would have been a great Hermione for the HP movies if she had been born a bit earlier. Even Cohen was good - he actually can be a good comic actor as long as he doesnt reach beyond that - despite the half a million pound oxbridge education, hes not yet smart enough to do things like scriptwriting and directing, so please dont do it Sacha!
