Re: Knight and Day
I liked this, much preferred the first half compared to the second half. I was laughing out loud in bits, thought it was quite funny, definitely not something to take too seriously. I did like the way Cruise played Ray at the beginning but thought it could have gone further.
I wasn't expecting it to be too great but I was interested to see what would be offered with these two Hollywood stars and I enjoyed it for what it was. As everyone said it is completely predictable (once you realise where they are going with Cruise's character), totally unrealistic and there is some very cheesy dialogue - but I am not adverse to a bit of cheese in a film when I'm in the mood, it can be a good laugh. 8/10 from me, glad I got to see it.
I had a good laugh on the bus home reading the production notes we were given. I didn't think it was a spoof film but it did walk the edge at times.
I saw some friends in the queue for Inception at the Odeon, I think they said a pair of tickets was going to cost them £32! I did feel a bit guilty telling them that I saw it on Wednesday for free (they know about my freebie cinema hunting anyway). Promised to try to take them along to my next preview so they can feel they have made some of their money back from Odeon!
Oh and regarding the trailers, I'd be interested in Narnia. I remember it was quite popular when I was growing up as it was on the TV but to tell you the truth I watched a couple of episodes and couldn't get what everyone at school was raving about.
While I agree with the general sentiment (particularly with regards to the Twilight franchise), I thought Vampires Suck looked awful.
I have a feeling that Cyrus wont be that great, but will have a few laugh out loud moments - Jonah Hill's staring eyes had me in fits. I'd be interested in seeing it.

Re: Knight and Day
I can't believe it wasn't meant to be a spoof! It was very funny in places and good escapism. But where did Cameron Diaz get the money from to fund the trip of a lifetime & invite Tom Cruise's parents along as well? I always find Tom Cruise films interesting as I try to figure out how they place other cast members etc. so that his short height isn't noticeable.

Re: Knight and Day
^^ Yes where did she get the money, access to his passport etc. I could just about believe it when he did it as he is a special agent type person with such means at his disposal. I think that is why I didn't enjoy the second half as much. I agree with kevinknapman that Diaz changing from a passive character to an active participant didn't work as well as it should have. But I just managed to ignore these plot holes.

Re: Knight and Day
Read all the reviews for this and lots of differing opinions!! I have to say as pointless as it all was, I rather enjoyed all the high octane racing around, which was definitely better in the first half than the second. I agree with kevinknapman about the fact that there was this turning point in the movie where is went from pretty good to the slightly ridiculous, especially when Cameron Diaz starts to actively participate in fighting off the "bad guys" with Cruise. But all in all it was a pretty good movie.

Re: Knight and Day
The whole movie was one gigantic plothole. How was she bumped off the airplane then got a seat again after first pleading in vain with the stewardess? Plane was empty anyway. How did they manage to travel through Europe and the Caribbean in such a short time and with her being unconcious for most of it and having no passport? Where would a lone agent have the money to check into what looked like the most exclusive hotel in Salzburg? Every credit card transaction would trace him so did he have a wad of cash on him? How can you have mobile phone reception on the most remote uninhabited Caribbean island? What was this energy-saving battery thingy anyway and why did it explode at a crucial moment? No insight was given into the characters, why would Tom Cruise cut off his old life and make his poor parents think he is dead? Who in their right mind believes Cameron Diaz is a car restorator who would fly half-way across America for a carboretor? How did Tom Cruise manage to escape from the hotel in mili-seconds, then jump into water and never be seen again? Why would Cameron Diaz suddenly turn agent-like too? Death wish?

Re: Knight and Day
Yeah, the more one thinks about this, the worse it is. The "action" is too dull for any of it to be passable, in my opinion. And this wasn't even funny bad, like say Repo Men. To me it's just insulting and "hey-give-us-you-money"-ish.Beate wrote:The whole movie was one gigantic plothole. Re: Knight and Day
Thought I'd try to answer some of Beate's questions on the gaping plot holes but I realise that some members may not have seen the film yet so I'll hide it under the spoiler function in case it goes into too much detail for some.
has also taught me that most are clever enough to realise that the government/organisation they work for can turn on them at any time if they are deemed to be no longer an asset, so they usually stockpile safe houses and resources (like his island) to deal with that time and go off grid when it comes.
Maybe they should hire me to help promote the film! I think I just enjoy these type of secret agent style stories, some are told a bit more seriously than others (i.e I don't think Jack Bauer is a comic role). I always have time for Alias, 24, Nikita type shows. But all of them are finished, not sure how I will get my fix.
I think Peter Sarsgaard's character had something to do with that. The FBI cleared that plane and filled it with their agents to take down Miller. Miller was aware that it could possibly happen but got on the plane anyway. Sarsgaard put June on it when he saw that Miller and her had interacted with each other to unsettle Miller.Beate wrote: How was she bumped off the airplane then got a seat again after first pleading in vain with the stewardess? Miller sounds like he is a top secret, highly skilled agent, a la Jack Bauer or Sydney Bristow! Not our Syd, but the original. You can see that I used to watch a lot of Alias type TV shows so this was perfectly within the realm of my reality! Such agents have a range of identities at their disposal and contacts around the world to make such things happen. Yeah not sure about that, maybe he put a mobile phone mast on his island so he could get reception on his secure phone when he needed it. Don't want to over think the logistics of that one, do you think he cut a special deal with tmobileBeate wrote: How can you have mobile phone reception on the most remote uninhabited Carribean island?
It was meant to be some kind of infinite, ultimate energy source. Ok this is where it gets unrealistic (only here you say...) And yes, pure luck that it didn't explode when it was in Miller's pocket. Unless he was clever enough to keep it in some icecold case and then when Sarsgaard pulled it out it overheated. Yeah I'm reaching on that one.Beate wrote: What was this energy-saving battery thingy anyway and why did it explode at a crucial moment?
Yes some insight may have been nice but this is standard practice when highly skilled individuals agree to become highly trained operatives on secret missions. It is dangerous to keep a normal life. Ask the original Sydney Bristow.Beate wrote: No insight was given into the characters, why would Tom Cruise cut off his old life and make his poor parents think he is dead?
Yeah, I don't have much for you on that. Although I don't see anything unrealistic about a car restorer travelling across the country to get rare car parts that she needs urgently in time for her sister's wedding. And Miller's parents did explain that he was a very strong swimmer who could hold his breath for extraordinary lengths of time - skills like this are probably what identified him as a special prospect / asset to be trained further by the Government.
Beate wrote:Who in their right mind believes Cameron Diaz is a car restorator who would fly half-way across America for a carboretor? I think its best not to think! This movie is not to be reasoned with!
