Hey Mr Glass - thanks. Yep... I have already used Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and it did remove it but just want to know if it's fully gone as that particular virus is a real b%&*h :p It wouldn't even let me open up task manager, forgetting being able to go into registry and check what's happening there!

I actually don't like AVG, it uses too much processor speed and really runs my computer slow. It also has allowed alot of viruses onto the computer which is why I use ESET as it blocks it as soon as detected. It won't open any webpage that contains viruses unlike AVG. Norton and McCaffee have always been pretty crappy in my opinion too. The best free one I've found was Avira but again... very slow in comparison to ESET and I need to sit near the PC when doing a scan!

Will try out that registry cleaner though...Not actually used any but might give it a try.

Oh, I meant to say best "free" anti-virus. One of the main reasons I recommend AVG is because its the best "free" anti-virus solution that I felt uses less resources! The reason you may have found it slow in the past is because it used to schedule a background scan during the day which slows down the system. ESET certainly seems to get top reviews for using minimal system resources and detecting more threats more than its competitors. Will try this one, myself :)

Actually I still have AVG running on one of my computers and it's still really slow.... It is considered good by some people but not quite what I like. And the only reason I don't uninstall is because I hardly use that computer. Avira uses less resources IMO. (For a free resource).

ESET isn't free... depending on how you get it.... :P ;) And it is definitely one I would recommend. It runs really quietly in the background, you can't even sense it's running (unless you're a gamer) but what I love most about it is the number of attacks it's blocked for me in terms of trojans and viruses that so far to date, I've not found in any other virus scanners!

Got your drift there ;) Installed it last night and so far I'm impressed with its small stamp on the memory stack. I may well convert my clients to using this in the long run, thanks for letting me know about. When working in IT as long as I have its somtimes easy to lose track in whats new and best for todays systems!

Haha, I agree with you on that! :D

Glad to hear you are liking it! :D The only annoying thing... well with my "free" version of it, sometimes the server fails to update! It's done it now though, although yesterday it wasn't working. It updates twice/three times a day and even then, doesn't require much processor speed.

Urgh, never recommending anything IT related again. Everytime I do so, it just all goes wrong for me!!! Since recommending ESET, my virus signature database has failed to update over the past few days. Infact it's not updating!!! Not a happy bunny.

Try this. I dont have the issue myself but as you know I only installed it this week ;) but I found this workaround: (I could give you a link to the source but it is a horrible ad-ridden blog, so I copy and paste the main part here). Responses show that this workaround works for many people. First part is just verifying you have the problem so you can skip to the workaround part.

How to verify if there is a problem with your update

First of all, you need to check if you actually have this problem with your installation of NOD32. It would be pointless to try and fix a non existent problem.

1. Right click your NOD32 taskbar icon and click 'open window'.

2. Select 'Update' from the left hand panel. Click on 'Update virus signature database'. If an update is being done, wait for it to finish.

2. Now select 'protection status' from left hand panel.

3. Note the number next to "Version of virus signature database"

4. Click here to visit ESET official page on virus definition updates. Verify the latest definition version listed on this page matches with your NOD32's definitions version (found in step 3).

If the two version numbers match, you do not have any update issues. If they don't then there is a problem so read on.

Workaround

At first, i though the problem was limited to pirated versions of NOD32. But according to posts made in several online forums, this is a problem with ESET's servers and affected legitimate versions of ESET products as well. Here is what i did to get around the problem:

(I use a extended trial version of NOD32. This workaround may or may not work for you, depending on the version and nature of your NOD32).

1. Manually delete the update cache of NOD32 or ESS. In Vista, browse to C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ or C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Smart Security\ (depending on which software you have).Delete the updfiles directory

2. Right click your NOD32 taskbar icon and click 'open window'. On bottom left corner, toggle 'advanced mode' if not already selected.

3. Now select 'setup' from left hand panel. Select 'Enter entire advanced setup tree'. Select 'Update' from left hand panel of the window that pops up.

4. Click the 'Edit' button next to the 'Update server' drop down menu. Enter http://u49.eset.com/eset_eval on the top text field and press add. Press ok to close the dialog box. Now select the newly inserted server from the 'Update server'drop down menu and press ok.

Try a manual update now or wait for auto update. It worked for me."

Help!!! I was happily using my laptop when it hibernated. It was plugged into the mains at the time, and I assumed it was recharging the battery. I checked to see if the leads were loose, but everything was as it should be. Now I don't know how to get it to come on again. I have pressed the Power button, and only one light is coming on, instead of two, (third light indicates WiFi).
Current situation: it is downstairs plugged into the socket, and I am unhappily upstairs sitting at the family computer, searching Google and all sorts trying to find an answer to my predicament.

When my laptop plays up I often end up unplugging it from the mains and removing the battery. When I put the battery back in and turned it on it has usually righted itself.
