I'm still undecided. Holding onto my tickets for now, will sleep on it further!

In the Guardian article - or maybe in a radio item I happened to hear; can't recall as the various productions are obviously receiving a lot of coverage - one of the cast made the point, or suggestion, that you have to reach a certain age to appreciate Chekhov. I might disagree about just how old that is, though, as on the few occasions when I've broken my own "No More Chekhov!" rule, I've found I have still not acquired the taste.
I heard the same point made about the new Jez Butterworth play, The River, at the Royal Court upstairs: one reviewer suggested that audience members ought to be 25+ or to have experienced heartbreak at least once before being exposed to this play. However, as it's so hard to get a ticket (fiendish new booking system specifically for this play), that would be the least of my considerations.
Whatever people think about individual productions, and as above, I'm likely to see/have seen few of them, Chekhov remains endlessly popular with directors/theatre companies, so there must be an audience somewhere out there...

If anyone is going to see this they are doing it in Russian all next week!
A horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, "Why the long face?"
A pony walks into the bar and whispers, "I'll have a beer, please." The barkeeper asks, "Why are you whispering?".
"I'm a little hoarse."

Found a 'trailer' for the Uncle Vanya production of the legendary Vakhtangov company that will be at the Noel Coward Theatre next week.

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
After hearing mixed reviews, I wasn't expecting much from Uncle Vanya. But it was a perfectly competent play about boredom - and the actors were very good. I wouldn't not recommend it, but I think there are more entertaining shows on in London at the moment.
Had a fantastic seat in the stalls - given how the top half of the stage was essentially never used, the seats in the gods must have been awful. Wouldn't recommend cheap seats up high for this one.

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
Finally saw Blood Brothers last night, right before it's about to close after 20+ years in the West End, and what a brilliant musical it is. I had very low expectations and wasn't too interested ins seeing it, but it was phenomenal. The first act was mostly very funny whereas the second act was the complete opposite (depressing, sad, heart-breaking); both strong acts in their own right though, However, I was mostly impressed by the amazing cast. Sean Jones (Mickey) in particular (and Eddie and Linda to a lesser extent) got to show a wide range of emotions and almost different characters throughout the show, going from a carefree and generous little kid to a depressed and drugged up mess at the end, really impressive. And Lyn Paul (Mrs Johnstone) had an absolutely stunning voice. I feel very fortunate I got to see some of the best BB cast members throughout the years which have come back to do the final two weeks of the show. 9.5/10
