I do feel sorry for the cleaners too! My office is sooo dirty and I won't even mention the toilets .

There was even a dead mouse outside, thankfully didn't see otherwise would have screamed!

There are a lot of crap people in public sector who I not only work with but deal with over the phone. Wish I could get rid of those people. I like my job and do go the extra mile yet can't get promoted or I don't get recognised for it. In fact my manager got upset that I could think for myself without needing his help!

In my organisation, you have to state on the application form if you know anyone who works there already. They're very strict on this and could lead to dismissal if found out at a later point or withdrawal of the application. (Quite pointless really as people still don't mention it!!)

I found recommendation policies mainly exist in the private sector (not sure of any public sector organisation with that but I can't be certain.) When I worked for a very large firm, they actually did have a recommendation policy BUT all you could do is say "I'd like to recommend so and so for the job" and they couldn't be family. If the manager thought they would make a good match then they'd get to interview but it wasn't guaranteed. Still depended on the manager. They always say networking is key (and this is very true if you need something done) but if you're rubbish at the job, you shouldn't be employed......regardless of who you know.

Lots of companies give you a bonus if you recommend someone and they get the job

Darn, I never got anything, and I definitely saved them a lot in placement fees!

I also feel sorry for the cleaners. They are not unionised, get no sick p*y or overtime, etc, but there's a limit to what I can say.

I'm going to add my two cents to the debate going on.

In today's employment market, a lot of decent jobs don't get advertised, - the only way to find out about them is through word of mouth, so it is often a case of who you know and your contacts. It also depends on your interactions with rival companies - rather then promoting a job vacancy, some business will simply try to poach some of the best candidates from other organisations without interviews at all. It's always sensible to maintain professional relationships within your workplace and with competing organisations.

I feel really sorry for the cleaners in my work place. Some of the things they are made to do is just so depressing. And I think they just get slightly above minimum wage!

Same here, the people here are dirty SOB's spill tea or coffee? Just leave it. Had Breakfast? Why bother putting bowl in the diswasher, when someone will do it eventually. I won't even mention the toilets. I knew a cleaner at my last place, who was the most pregnant person I'd ever seen, I thought she was going to burst. Obviously she wanted as much p*y as possible before having the baby. NO one would help her or put the cups in the washer, no leave it on the desk, after she's done the rounds. I b*ght her a load of baby stuff as she probably was on the mimimum wage

tilly if you think the deadmouse is bad - the cleaner in my workplace had to clean the female toilet where someone had left their used sanitary towel on the floor for everyone to see. Imagine how that must have been. He actually cried afterwards and I didn't know what to say to comfort him. Even more horrible was my manager didn't say a word of comfort but "it's your job, that's what you get pa*d to do." I was like, that's hardly an incentive! Someone also did their business in the men's cubicle - the things they have that we don't in the female toilets! Don't ask me how. And he was made to clean that up. He does get pa*d extra for those jobs but the fact is it's horrible that he has to do it. Sometimes I wish we didn't have any public toilets at work. Even more, it shocks me that people actually behave like that. Our flushes work perfectly fine! I just don't understand why people don't use them! On the other hand, his fellow cleaners seem to think it's acceptable to use the staff female toilets and leave their urine on the seat.....

That's really awful. In my place the cleaner is mainly for our frontline services. Everything we do in the office is for us to clean up. It does annoy me as my manager's sidekicks has a regular go at the cleaners and staff but then he leaves 7 mugs near the desk at the end of the day. And as I share his desk, I find it rather disgusting to see such mugs, especially when they have decayed a week later!

Not so cute when you catch nasty diseases at work, though. I'll spare you and not mention some of the things to which unfortunate colleagues have succumbed!
