My mother probably didn't notice, she found it boring and not scary. I saw her yawn a bit .
Oh no! I too did not find it scary but I love supernatural stories, so was hooked, and I always enjoy watching Rebecca Hall. Didn't realise she is the daughter of Maria Ewing (opera singer), no wonder she looked familiar. I also remember her in The Town and Please Give.

Massive spoiler ahead:
The boarding school used to be Rebecca Hall's home where she lived with her father, mother, various servants and a half-brother. Her parents got into a big argument and tragedy ensued, killing both the mother and the half-brother, who was Imelda Staunton's son and went on to become the ghost the boys were so spooked of. All he ever wanted were some friends, so when matron found out what had become of the girl and what she did now, it was the perfect ruse to lure her to the school so she could remember and become the ghost child's friend again. She could see him but she had taught herself not to remember her traumatic childhood, making up another story instead. A few of the boys had started to see the ghost too as they were lonely, and he had unwittingly scared the child that then died from an asthma attack, after being chucked into the darkness by that horrible teacher who always tried to toughen up the boys. The guy with the shotgun who tried to rape her was just there to distract us from the real story, and Dominic West wasn't in on the plot, he was just a sad teacher traumatised by his war days.

Well there is a hint if I said what the ginger boy was able to see - both near the begining and also at the end.

where they all dead all along?
if not, is Florence dead at the end? Is Maud dead? Was she ever alive? Is the weird guy a ghost too??
@Beate, everything you are saying is actually not the parts I am confused with ;)
It could be argued that Tom gave her the antidote and she recovered, but would always have him with her for the rest of her life....on the otherhand.....she died and was only visible to Robert who'd already said that he could see ghosts, and the redheaded boy who was also known to be able to see ghosts. This is the director's explaination as he made mention of the significance of the ginger boy to enlighten us.
haha, I think "some" people will have to drop Immortals and speak directly to the Director

@Stuartboy, then the film is hugely flawed!
Shame I have better things to do on Thursday, I would have loved to chat with the director!

@ Celini
Maud wasn't dead to begin with - she was the school matron, although she took the same poison that she gave to the girl and kileed herself. She wanted both of them to be together with her son Tom. I hadn't even considered that Robert could have been dead, although he seemed to interact with the staff and pupils of the school.

I don't see it like that. I think Maud was dead at the end because she poisoned herself and wanted to be with her son. She tried to take Florence with her but she told Tom that she could not be with him and he saved her. If Robert could see ghosts, why did he tell Florence that there was no child left at the school?

Major glitch! Robert said "there is only the 3 of us" when Florence enquire about her near rape experience... that would be Robert+Florence+Maud OR the weird guy... one of them is a ghost ;)
