Shame
Re: Shame
Shame the film was pointless...
Why they couldn't have elaborated on why he was in this position of short term relationships, casual sex and an abrupt sibling relationship.
This film is associated with Film 4 and The National Lottery.
If I wanted to see an Adult sex film this one wouldn't be it!!!
Ok for free but I'd be very very disappointed if I had put my hand in my pocket!!
(not such a good week for freebies with NYE as well, can it be redeemed with War Horse on Sunday??)

If you live in a town, you are probably never more than 15 metres from a rat.

Re: Shame
Saw this in Wimbledon on Tuesday. I found it compelling and very sad with excellent performances. I have two brothers and if they walked in when I was in the shower I'd physically and verbally throw them out and I'm sure they'd run out anyway! Surely the fact that didn't happen showed what a f**ked up relationship they had. I did think the New York song went on a while but was touching as I thought the whole point was they thought leaving Ireland for America was a chance to escape their old life for a new one. And it didn't happen. Not the ideal film to go with my mum (she hated it) but I came out numb but still thinking it was a worthwhile film.

I told you that it wouldn't be just sex! Glad to see you & Oh lasted to the end.Yinster wrote:Saw this tonight in Glasgow. An older crowd and not just cos it was an 18. Half were over 50.
Film was ok. Not bad but not good either. I see how they tried to make the film last longer than necessary. Sister did my head in. Maybe cos it was Carey Mulligan. A couple of walk out in the last part of the film. Not as much sex as I thought. Not much else to say really. 5/10

Re: Shame
Cineworld Haymarket's basement screen is indeed one of the worst. The incline is poor so the sight lines are awful. There is one aisle in the middle so latecomers can be an annoyance as it is difficult for them to take the remaining seats easily. Plus there was a pesky mouse or even mice! (I wonder if we were all sitting very close to each other). In contrast I really like the big screen at Cineworld Haymarket so I will not totally give up on that venue but I must admit I am very disappointed when they tell you the screening is in the basement.
I didn't find this film as bad as some. In fact I went from moments of being quite intrigued with the underlying background story and every time I thought we were there, it didn't quite make it and it left me quite disappointed. A lot was unsaid but McQueen did not shy away from playing out the sex scenes again and again as if to drum the central character's behaviour (and all the associated dysfunction that stems from their lifestyle) into the audience.
I did find Mulligan's rendition of 'New York, New York' particularly unremarkable - however I was taken by Brandon's reaction to it and found it quite moving and sadly telling. That made the whole scene worthwhile for me.
I agree with some of what was said by other forum members and I think the unstated background story possibly had a lot to do with:
1. some kind of history of child abuse (possibly incest)- both do not talk about parents or other family. They only have each other and even this relationship is fraught. They cannot show (or he in particular) affection to each other without there being an underlying tension.
2. Brandon gets overly (extremely) agitated in hearing / seeing his sister engage in any adult/sexual relationships. Almost a jealousy? He openly berates her for this (maybe quite rightly as it turns out his friend is married but you get the impression that his disapproval does not stem from that sense of morality - he wants to control her in this area, but he is also clear that he doesn't want the responsibility of being her overall saviour which confuses and alienates her further into despair).
3. Both display mental health issues. They both self harm and do not have healthy relationships with others - he can't engage emotionally with anyone and struggles to have sex with a woman he actually knows and can maybe have a relationship with (hours later he manages to have a rampant sex session with one of his nameless contacts so you know the previous problem was not physical). She is emotionally clingy to the extreme. Her phone call to an old boyfriend shows she is riddled with open insecurities and low self esteem. They are almost two opposites of the same coin.
4. Brandon cannot control / continue to carefully conceal his sex addiction - watching porn like it's Eastenders in the evening is strange. He downloaded an insane amount of hardcore porn on to his work computer but he is a duplicitous character who does everything to appear 'normal' - his boss / friend doesn't even suspect it could be him, suggesting it could be an intern messing with his PC.
Both Mulligan and Fassbender are very good in this - however Michael Fassbender is one of three actors who can do no wrong by me right now (Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy are the others). I will loyally watch (and appreciate!) anything they are in. They are my current favourites!
Overall I would give this film 7/10 - I can understand why some people didn't take to the slow pace but I appreciate the effort, even though I don't think it is as strong as it could have been.
