The film kept me engaged, although I could not follow every piece of dialogue. I'm with the modernisers and would have much preferred modern English.

Re: Coriolanus
I have to say I was totally drawn in to the story! I thought the performance by Fiennes was excellent and Butler was very good (after all he is from Paisley!). I thought Vanessan Redgrave was excellent in her role though I was a little concerned for the colour of her hair, particularly the back where it was yellowish (looking as though it was nicotine stained!). I did not know anything about this "play" before tonight and did find the mixture of modern style with old language to be interesting/different.
I certainly did have to concentrate and didn't doze off at all though some others nearby did!
Would I watch it again . . . . the answer would be "No", not even when it comes on TV eventually!
Rant: I don't know why some clowns still insist on using their mobiles during films and think that no-one will notice!
I spoke to a man at the end who had been using his phone as he was too far away during the film to tell him to switch it off (I didn't want to break the mood of the film by using my stage whisper to tell him to put it off!). Initially he said he hadn't had it on during the film but then apologised! I think I'd like a job as the mobile phone police in cinemas!

Re: Coriolanus
Saw this tonight in Nottingham Cineworld. My partner didn't enjoy it, he found the concept hard to follow and didn't feel this crossed over well from Theatre to cinema in the way he would have liked.
I found the film hard to follow at the start, (mod cons without the mod English) and didn't really understand all the dialog. But once I got into the film and the concept it was enjoyable.
I would only recommend this film to family and friends I feel would appreciate it.

Re: Coriolanus
The film had some walkouts in Cardiff too.OH said he would have liked to have had subtitles.
From reading the posts this is a major marmite film - you love it or hate it.
I enjoyed the film/play. The setting drew me into the plot and hey whats not to like about jon snow, I was suprised to see him.
Have to go to work now so will finish later.

Forgot to say that he was such a mummy's boy wasn't he? This great leader yet the mother was more scarier than him. And they had this weird relationship between them. Very greek tradgy indeed

Re: Coriolanus
Saw this last night in Wandsworth. Cinema about 60% full - eleven people walked out - maybe they didn't realise it was Shakespeare? I found the film difficult and quite demanding to watch - probably because I cannot attune to people in modern dress speaking Shakespearean English. The cinematography was appalling - very grainy, most of it looked like it had been filmed on a handheld camera which made me quite seasick. It reminded me of a student production. Can't criticise the plot as that was Shakespeare's and the acting was fine, especially Vanessa Redgrave – who gave her character warmth and depth. However, every time I looked at Ralph Fiennes intense face I couldn’t help but think of Voldemort!

I thought the film was good and the performances from Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave were very good. I admit that the Shakespean English did make it hard to understand everything that was said but I understood enough to get the gist. I think as they were doing the play in a Modern setting that perhaps they should have thought about ditching the Shakespearian language for modern English. Just a thought!

Re: Coriolanus
I thought this was a partially successful updating. Some of the modern stuff worked some of it didn't. Shots of peasants shouting 'Bread! Bread!' outside of grain stores in ancient Rome might work but just looks a little daft with modern day police with riot shields. The use of breaking news on TV worked a little better.
The acting was excellent. Both Fiennes and Butler were good. The rest of the cast a little more mixed in quality and would have liked more Jessica Chastain (who wouldn't?).
I did find it a little distracting that it was clearly shot somewhere in the Balkan States (Serbia as the end credits revealed). Accepting Brits playing Romans in Serbia was a bit too much to ask.
On the whole this was an honourable attempt at one of the meatier, less accessible Shakespeares and it did have some very fine moments but did have a tendency to drag on the whole.
Just about worth seeing for some decent acting and effective warfare scenes. Not entirely sure about the scene where Coriolanus is banished from Rome whilst being on what looked like an episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show though. I did half expect them to cut to a break then return with a segment trying to find out if Coriolanus was really young Martius' biological father.

Re: Coriolanus
Saw this in Nottingham and was pleasantly surprised by its Shakespearian dialogue. Some parts were hard to understand but on the whole I was able to follow it. My sister wasn't too impressed. Also met another FMUK member Spuddyer for the first time even though she had clocked me at other screenings before. Lol
