Titanic 3D
Re: Titanic 3D
Saw this tonight at The O2 by my pathetic self amongst a surfeit of couples and families. It's the movie we all love to hate and I knew exactly what I was going into.
However, I shockingly found this to be quite an exquisite experience! Despite the hammy acting and awful melodrama of the first half, it's hard to deny the near perfect technological wizardry of the second. The visual effects do not feel dated in the least and the newly introduced 3D is fantastically immersive, particularly in the vertigo-inducing corridor bits where Kate Winslet's character is trying to locate her handcuffed beau. And of course, the final sequence is just as spectacular as you can imagine. The only effect I did not like was the initial pan over the vessel as it set out to sail. You could blatantly see the occupants had been animated Tintin style.
On a side note, I haven't seen "Titanic" in 15 years and I was astounded to find that I could not recollect several scenes whatsoever. I certainly did not realise Bill Paxton's segment was as long as it was.
Overall, "Titanic 3D" is a brilliant experience. If you're a fan of the movie, you dare not miss it. And if you're not, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Re: Titanic 3D

This was the first time OH had seen the film, he was awake for all of it so had the feeling he must have liked it. We also had the larger cinema for the screening and it does make a difference to the film. Normal tv and DVD just don't convey the full specticle of the scenes.
8/10
Don't think I would have dropped the diamond overboard, no matter how much I loved Jack!! and I always thought the ending reminded me of the 'Shinning', where they (the dead people) all get together again - spooky

I really enjoyed seeing this on the big screen again. As previously said, we all know the story but some of the details had escaped my memory eg he scene of the mum with the 2 wee children having a bed-time story as the ship is going down . . . that just about ended me! I don't easily cry at films but that got me as did Yinster's singing as I was seated in front of Y and OH. (only kidding!

Just back from the Printworks - huge screened used for this screening and it was almost full. Enjoyed the film but just wished it had started earlier than 7.30 p.m. - didn't finish till 10.55 p.m.

Re: Titanic 3D
Gosh what an epically long film it is, I don't think I've sat through it in one sitting (without the aid of a pause button or adverts) since the first time.
Gosh how young they all looked, especially with J Edgar being the last Leo film I've seen
Gosh how incredibly like 2D that 3D was. There seemed no point to it, there's only a couple of scenes where it's effective, most of the time it's just blurring foreground or background shots and panning scenes are just a blur. I kept lifting up my glasses to check and half the time you could have watched it without them.
I sat there thinking it would be nice to see a 'where are they now?' program on some of the minor character actors, interesting to see faces that have popped up in film & tv over the years and then others, like Jack's italian mate, never to be seen again. I also wondered what the deal is with their fees are they getting extra royalties/ fees for the re-issue of the film?

Despite seeing this in 2D in the 90's, I enjoyed seeing it again in 3D. I Liked the way the whole screen was close to you and 3D images.
(IF true to life, it shows you what the Snobs think of tier 3 ticket holders and only saving ones own!!)
It was a bit hard on the knees there for the 3 hours as not a great deal of leg room. (Haymarket) There was no heating so a number of people had to wear their coats! I was glad as hate hot cinemas!!

Re: Titanic 3D
Well, this was certainly an interesting experience. I'm far too young to have seen the film when it first came out which is a shame as consequently the first time I saw Titanic was on DVD. Today was the second time I had seen it. I had initially been very affected by the film, although I pretended not to be; I therefore awaited this screening with uncontrollable excitement - finally I was going to see this $1.8 billion smash on the big screen, where surely it belongs, where multiple viewings were common amongst cinemagoers for that film at the time.
There's no denying the technical virtuosity displayed by Cameron onscreen in the second half of the film - some of those images of the hundreds of people in the water really stay with you. However, I was somewhat more keen to point out its flaws this time round - the fact that the dialogue is somewhat throwaway, and that the romantic side of the plot feels a little bit on the shallow side and results in a loss of emotional impact (mind you, if Cameron wanted to put more weight on it, he would have made a 4 hour film which audiences certainly wouldn't sit through!). There's obviously two relationships going on here; one between Rose and Jack, and one between Cameron and the ship, and the latter is definitely the domineering of the two. I still loved its racy sense of adventure and beautiful cinematography, but I'm not sure what it was - most probably the 3D glasses which darkened the picture heavily - I didn't feel I quite connected with it as much this time round. Which brings me to the 3D. Very good if you enjoy depth, but I didn't really enjoy sitting for 3 hours with silly glasses on. Especially as in my opinion it distracted me a little from the film.
I think I'll go and see it again when it comes out. I adored it the first time round and still thought it was a solid film this time. It was interesting to see how similar the score of Avatar was to Titanic - sounded almost identical in parts. I actually thought it was a much better movie than Avatar - mind you, a lot of movies are.
And I'm still in love with Kate Winslet!
8/10 - the O2 wasn't very busy, was it?!

Re: Titanic 3D
yeah well that was a lot better than I thought it would be - it was pretty good in fact, though the replay value cant be all that for such a long movie. Technically spot-on, Cameron was best with the slow suspense-building scenes but also awesome action shots. The story was pretty well told too, fictional in large part though it may be.
I think it was Billy Zane playing the bad guy? He ran the show with his pompous eccentricity, way better than any other cast member. Pity hes washed up now yet other far less talented (eg. Leonardo) have gone on to better things. Though young Leo was in his best kind of role here, the troubled flashboy, did very well as Zane's foil. Notably the lady who played Old Rose was marvellous too, and delivered a line that I think will haunt me all my life. Even then, the ship was probably the biggest star on the movie, depicting a true feel for the tragic behemoth. ANd of course the Atlantic itself, that scourge of sailors, was bared completely in that grim mass drowning scene - that will stop me sleeping tonight! Or give me nightmares...
For me the biggest problem by far (and this was never resolved) with the movie is the Quixotic plot - the way the Titanic is built up by the shots of the ship's outside and interior with huge orchestral scores to be this wonderful thing... when we all know its a folly built and run by idiots - and that detracts a lot from the good nature and noble efforts of the crew and people on board - do a better job beforehand, instead of f**king around and then going down nobley, yes? Its not easy to root for a gang of fools, and you do half-feel that the crew deserved a lesson for being so stupid so many many times in the movie. Christ, at times it felt like the ship was being manned by a team of Lee Evans clones.
The other problem is thats its a hard to feel bad for the posh and the privelidged, who make up the bulk of the film's main cast. Lets be honest, you want to see them suffer once you see the way the 'lower classes' are treated on the ship.
3d was ok, but i think this movie needs IMAX for full benefit, if we ignore a couple of very ropey special effects shots (two shots of the titanic sinking are obviously little models in a water tank lol).
One thing bothers me - was there any inference that Jack was the father of Rose's daughter?

Re: Titanic 3D
Edinburgh was packed last night. Seemed to be a combined Sky/Times effort but the Sky girl was there looking miserable as usual.
We had to wait until 7.25 to get in which was a pain.
Was this as bad as I remembered? No the first half was fine and then it went on and on and on - I can see where the lyrics inspiration came from!!
Actually I only sniggered in a few bits to be elbowed by my OH. He felt sea sick he told me due to the 3D. Personally I kept taking my glasses off as I couldn't actually see what was 3D about most of it. Clever marketing is the real answer, I suspect.
Anyway, it really wasn't as bad as I remember, so that's a compliment from me!! Would I watch it a third time - absolutely not!
