I wonder if it was for the benefit of anyone confused by the clock change!

They were having problems with the keys and we had to wait outside for ages until the person with the keys turned up (maybe he had forgotten to change his clock?).

I went to see this film at Fact Picturehouse, Liverpool on my own this morning, having been let down at the very last minute by my friend. I am so glad that I did, because I enjoyed it so much.Well, perhaps 'enjoyed' isn't the correct word given the film's sometimes traumatic content. I was engrossed in the story from start to finish, and at times had to keep reminding myself that this was based on a true story. Jack's story really touched me and I was struggling to hold back the tears in a few other places too.
Emily Watson was extremely well cast as Margaret Humphreys, in fact I thought the whole film was well thought out. No sensationalising of the story - just a simply told presentation about the forced migration of British children that was condoned by all involved. Still struggling to get my head around the fact that this was still happening as late as 1970.

I think this film deserves a wider audience, highly recommended.

I saw this at the Curzon Mayfair (thanks to tilly) where there was a very good atmosphere - no unwanted distractions at all.

I know there has been a mixed reaction to the film on here (although everyone agrees the story needed telling), but I thought it was highly intelligent film making. Some very good acting and an excellent directorial debut. I found it extremely refreshing to have such understated performances and unmanipulative storytelling.

The film was followed by a very good Q&A with Jim Loach.

Having now got our computer back (nearly four weeks without one!!) I can start submitting my reviews again! I was really interested to see this film and was very glad that I did. When films like this come along, it makes you sit there afterwards for a couple of minutes (or even longer in this case) and think about it. How did this happen? Why did it happen?

The actors were great. I looked up Margaret Humphries (the main character played by Emily Watson) on Wikipedia after the film and I only needed to look at her photo to know that Emily Watson had portrayed her accurately. She looks a very compassionate and caring person and that certainly showed in the film. All of the characters had their own personal strengths (and weaknesses of course, but that is part of being human) and they all played a part in making this film what it is - something that everyone should watch! The subject matter was dealt with in just the right way, not too much dwelling on certain matters that were involved in the story, just enough to make you realise how awful it must have been for all of those children who were taken from their families and "dumped" on the other side of the world with nothing. There were happy endings and some not so happy but it was all shown in equal quantities so the audience were aware of all sides of the story.

The only thing that spoiled it is that in just over a year of watching film previews, I managed to miss the first couple of minutes (nature called!) and an elderly lady stood up and said in a very loud voice "you are spoiling the film" whilst I was trying (with the help of a very kind member of staff at the cinema) to find a seat in the dark. I think she was the one that spoiled it not me. I would have stood at the back if I knew I was going to get shouted at!! Anyway, she only spoiled it for 30 seconds which wasn't too bad in the stream of things.
