Do you honestly believe there would be female officials if the FA hadn't have been forced into it by legislation? There's a female version of the game. On these grounds you could call the leading snooker authority a bunch of sexists for not allowing women to compete with men. And darts! Can men really be that much better at throwing tungsten at a board from a few yards? Probably not. It's just it pays so much better for men so they can do it for a living, women can't because it pays so crap. Isn't that sexist then? It's a really ugly situation when you can't say anything slightly un-PC without being fired. It's getting out of control.

i dont think they should have been fired, and i dont think Ron Atkinson should have either.

however they should get all the slack possible for being old farts. You make derogatory comments about a large slice of the public and you can only expect to get slated by them every time you subsequently appear or speak in public.

While I am not a football fan, a lot of women are or even play football themselves, so derogatory comments like that are totally out of order. It does not matter that he only says what a lot of men are thinking (and probably saying down the pub), it's still wrong for an official to say those, and we will never root out sexism if people like him are allowed to stay on. You have to behave at your place of work and if you don't know how to do that then you have no place there.
thing is, Beate, i dont think a lot of people do say it down the pub anymore. if its said, its topoke fun at old men's attitude, in young groups of people. i remember i did it once when i was 16, then stopped boecos i realised i was just saying something my dad used to say.

theres so many faults with our dinosaur generation, along with their many strengths that we dont have.

Women! Get out of the Football thread!

Jokes, jokes...

The sacking sends the right message out. During the match I was amused by how the various commentaries seemed obsessed that there was a female linesman (encouraged by how often the TV feed cut to her, I suppose) when really it's a non-issue. The beeb's text commentary hilariously attempted "un-sexism" by referring to how the female linesman was getting decisions right (subtext: even though she's a woman!), which is really no better than Wolves fans accusing her of getting said decisions wrong for said reason. Now, hopefully, the only media chatter we'll get (banter or not) related to the so-called issue will be from the ever-witty Dalglish family.

I do not think he should have been sacked for this. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether you like someone's opinion or not, they are still entitled to it!

That's not the point though. "Freedom of expression" is often cited as an excuse. You can't say everything just because it's your opinion. They clearly have discriminatory views and should not have expressed them while at their place of work. It's just plain wrong.

Sorry Ibaxx but you can't just say whatever you want. If you opinion is sexist, racist or discriminatory you stay quiet.

And that makes it better how? When Gordon Brown was recorded off air being unkind about a voter, he had to go grovel too. He wasn't sacked as he is the Prime Minster I guess but you have to face up to your actions.

it makes it better in regard to them being professional at work, Beate, and being unprofessional outside it.

it doesnt excuse them for not being better people, as i explained above.
