Other Desert Cities - nice stage layout but was it worth the effort? I found this largely dull and droll. I have no idea how you can get so many people in one theatre who will laugh at drollness consistently for 2 hours. Well there were one or two interesting lines.

Each to their own, Raj. I thought this was a very sharp script and I really enjoyed it. Was happy to laugh consistently!

I might be biased - I am not big on the Old Vic, almost everything I have seen there has been a bit of damp squib, though that might be just the shows I have seen. I've probably unconsciously associated the place with drifting off to sleep by now.

The play felt kinda directionless to me. I think its clear that I like to have a stated direction in any show or film that I see. I am not motivated by 'open' plays with a lack of momentum, because I tend to think, well whats the point of it, this could go anywhere, its like watching a bunch of flatmates talking, so why have I travelled to watch this for?

This shouldn't be confused with my absolute hate for No Direction.

Personally I associate the Old Vic with quality drama, but with sometimes a tendency to go slightly for style and names over substance.

However in the case of this play surely the direction was towards the revelations concerning the death of the other son and in particular the shocking part played in it by the parents?

Yes. I cant stay if its sending me to sleep., the sun was shining too bright outside for that.

Fair enough, if you're not enjoying it. Personally I enjoyed the humour in the first half, but can understand how you found it directionless in that case.

However that comment is unfair on the play as a whole. The mood in the second half was much darker and there was a clear direction. In my experience it's not that uncommon to not know where a play is heading at the interval.

yes I am starting to see that plays try to use the interval for dramatic effect, something I am not used to. Perhaps I should have stayed but I was really in danger of snoring loudly. I don't think I am geared for such splits.

Perhaps I should take a break from the Vic until I lose the association with previous boring monologue.

Sad to learn that I Can't Sing is closing so soon after opening and only giving two weeks notice.
If I'm honest I didn't really expect it to last long but surprised they have pulled the plug so quickly.

I didn't see it as a long running show, but didn't think it would go this quickly, we really enjoyed it.

I suspect the piece confused its potential audience (who didn't turn up) - was it a satire or a tribute to xfactor? Harry Hill's involvement at least suggested comedy. But it came with Simon Cowell's approval and was staged at the home of family entertainment - the London Palladium - which is a large theatre to fill night after night. Then it would seem from the reviews the score & play was weak. I wonder what the team behind Jerry Springer the Opera would have made of the subject matter. But then that might have been trying to pull off the same trick twice.
