I agree about Anastacia McCleskey's vocals, but I thought that Renato Paris also stood out. Also apart from Burt himself Kyle Riabko's arrangements are pretty special IMHO.

I agree Cliveas, a very accomplished artist indeed.

As an aside, last night travelling was a total nightmare. Piccadilly Circus was exit only, and only one exit due to overcrowding. This has a knock on effect to Leicester Square. which was nearly as bad. Going home was over crowded as well. This let to a bottleneck at the bottom of the escalator where everyone just piled into each other. The busker showed us a different way to get to the platform thank goodness. So, take care tonight in case its the same

I didn't think Renato Paris had enough lead vocalist time. I would have liked to hear more from him.

As you've seen this before in a different venue, would love to hear your thoughts on the transfer after you've seen it at the Criterion.

I think the poster implies it's a jukebox musical but actually, reading the website very carefully, I'm not sure the show ever describes itself as a musical, any reference to musical is in quotes. I blame the press. :p Misleading - it's just a fairly pleasant gig!

I certainly wasn't expecting a musical when I went to see it based on what I had seen at that time.

I thought the staging raised it above "just" a gig, however that's based on the Menier of course.

Well it's basically the same show but with an interval (there wasn't one at the Menier). As I suspected before seeing it at the Criterion it is far more suited to the space at the Menier which I would guess is more similar to the the original New York venue.

It has suffered with the transfer for a number of reasons, not least the reduced space available. They have managed to cram pretty much the whole set and props in, but everything is so much more cramped. For example the piano is now facing the back wall right in the corner and it's much harder to see the drum kit when in it's main position. At the Menier aroumd a third of the audience was on the sides and having seen it from both the front and the side I think it worked well. Now while they have tried by having the nominal stage seating much of the time it just looks odd when key performers have their backs to nearly all the audience. Presumably due to the lack of space the same use of the audience seating is not made (Kyle perched on the arm of an audience member's armchair several times at the Menier).

In particular the wow effect of the parts that take place above the stage is greatly reduced when the audience is not all on the same level. It doesn't really look anything out of the ordinary in a West End theatre, especially if you aren't in the stalls. I was most disappointed though with the lighting, it was quite dark at times and I don't understand why the lamps at the front of the stage were so small. The effect of the pieces of paper falling down was completely lost.

This is rather subjective but I also felt that there was a collective audience dynamic at the Menier (like a good gig) but here we were just individuals watching something.

I also found the change of name awkward. The repeated usage of the refrain 'What's it all About' seemed far more natural when it was the name of the show, which is now named after just one of the songs in the middle.

After saying all of that I have to emphasise that I still really enjoyed seeing this again. Visually it was disappointing compared with before, but I still thought it was imaginative. And the music was the same as before. With respect to that I have to say that I would still argue with the "safe" comment. To re-arrange so drastically such famous songs, especially while the composer is still with us was IMHO very brave. And most importantly they work really well and personally I loved them.

There was also one plus on the move of venue. While we saw the cast in the bar afterwards at the Menier, they weren't singing. Having them perform on the steps of Eros was a bonus!

Just got back from the Dick Whittington panto in M/c. Took OH, mum and dad. Wasn't sure what to expect but we all had a great time. The show has been brought up to date and so was entertaining for both kids and adults. Some excellent singing and dance routines and a very unusual table tennis game.

saw the Lorax, which was certainly lively. Fast paced show aside from some unconvincing puppetry at times.

Scrooge - largely comedic version that plays with the 3rd wall, well, near abandons it towards the end. Excellent and thanks to prettyxcool for the spare seat.

Sunny Afternoon - seen it before, but still a blast, especially the staggered high tempo ending.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

I'm afraid that a lot of SFF codes these days are 'invited guest list only'.

It looks like that they have all gone now, but that doesn't stop you making a 'Wanted' post in case there are returns.

Went to see Mrs Henderson Presents, got confused with the film with Judi Dench which I have yet to see. Lovely to see jeanelle and valda (again!).

We had the front row of Grand Circle seats - it was very high up, and I do not like any front row seats in Circle, whether Royal or Grand! The reason being that there is a bar in front of you blocking your view so I really need to sit upright on a booster seat to look over the bar or lean forward to look over the bar to have a non-restricted view! In winter time, I can fold up my coat and sit on it to give me a few inches of height, but it is not really that comfortable. jeanelle and valda was in the second row behind, which may have better views, although the people behind me complained their view was still restricted, and had to lean forward to get a better view.

Enjoyable musical, liked the score. The first half was much better, funny, slapstick humour, and nice dancing, but second half was dealing with war and the blitz so a bit more grim. Be aware there is full frontal nudity! Men as well. :D 7/10
