Bookcrossing
Now that I have finally given away the last copies of both of the books that I managed to get for World Book Night, I thought I would more formally mention Bookcrossing (http://www.bookcrossing.com/) which is a huge source of free used books.
Originating in the US there are now official Bookcrossing zones all over the UK as well. On the second Tuesday of the month groups all over get together to pass on books they have read and to pick-up ones of interest (I go to one based in a pub in Waterloo). But you don't have to go then, you can pop in and take any books of interest from the bookcase at any time.
Some people bookcross by post and as all books are registered, the website effectively acts as a giant offered and wanted board. This includes the books on bookshelves in Bookcrossing zones.
It also allows you to track the movements of books that you have passed on (subject to the participation of the subsequent readers) and place and read reviews etc.

Ultima 4 from GOG - free to download, old school RPG!!
Just had a quick look on GOG and it seems they're giving away Ultima 4 for free. I have no idea if it's a decent game or not, might be a classic, might be naff, but since it's free I think there's little to lose.
They also have Beneath a Steel Sky, Dragonsphere, and a couple of other freebies on the site. Worth checking out for some retro goodness.
