Looks like I'm the first person to review this. It would be so much easier if I could say "I agree with KK".
I went to the private Love Film screening last night at the lovely Soho Hotel. There was a brief introduction by the screenwriter, Peter Straughan, who made it clear this was a "tricky film".
While I definitely enjoyed this, I would not rush out to watch it again immediately. The film has very little action so, while tense, it is long and heavy and you can't afford any lapses in concentration.
It has the best of British acting on display here, long established thespians like Hurt, Goldman, Firth, Jones, Strong and Hinds; coupled with up and coming British stars like Hardy and Cumberbatch. It is a fantastic ensemble cast and Oldman is excellent as Smiley, so cool and reserved on the surface, yet the eyes reveal his inner turmoil.
The script is ingenious, so clever in delivering a complex plot that the audience is still able to follow. Each character is identifiable yet suggestive of having ambiguous and shady ambitions. One of my favourite things was how intelligently the film adds tension and thrills with very little action. The soundtrack is a delight, with very little score, instead trivial and everyday sounds seem magnified (eg wasp buzzing, pen clicking, buttering toast) and add thrills and suspense.
The film is well paced although it is not always made clear about which scenes are set in the present and which are flashbacks. The audience is also required to keep track of each character's (changing) allegiances. The intricate plot is unravelled well but, IMO, the discovery of the mole was not satisfying and the story needed more development to make this revelation justifiable.
But overall this is a superbly written and brilliantly cast film that is intelligently complex. Clearly this will be the critics' darling but they are likely to enjoy it more than an everyday cinema goer.
8/10.
