The Grey
Re: The Grey
Spoiler alert:
I was held gripped from the start. Liked the man vs nature theme, and the discovery that it wasn't as predictable as first thought.
I rollercoasted to the end, and then found the end left a puncture wound: totally deflated. Remember myself thinking - 'is that it - nooooo!!!' (I invested my time, effort, and will, and wanted the character with his own Irish accent to be the one who survived - lol - we need more own-accent-intact movies).
Then I saw the end snippet. Hmmm, I thought, intriguing. This plunged my mind into thinking back a bit. If you remember, he was wearing his white winter clothes when he had the flashback to his wife and him snuggling up to her in the bed. Could this suggest that he killed himself (same clothes as that he wore during the shotgun barrel scene)? This might be why he said he couldn't be with his wife. He might've entered a kind of limbo between heaven and hell. The movie is based on a story called 'Ghost Walker'. Perhaps it's a test for Neeson's character to overcome. His god could not hear him because he had that final test to complete - possibly to show that he really did have that fighting spirit that drives the will to live. Quite the reverse of the motto in Gladiator of what you do in life echoes in eternity (or thereabouts). Well perhaps his challenge was to show that what he should have done in life, and not have given up.

Re: The Grey
Thank you for the reminder.
Re: The Grey
One of the most disappointing films I have seen in a very long time. There is the potential for it to be a wonderful exploration on the human condition but quickly became a farcical Liam "wolf puncher" Neeson action flick.
Re: The Grey
Having now found this thread again - thanks Beate! - I'd like to add my thruppence worth.
I thought this was incredible. I watched it last night, alone in the dark, with the sound up loud and the bass turned up full on the subwoofer. Boy, what sounds!
The plane crash was amazing as well, making you feel completely immersed in the situation and feeling every bump and depressurisation.
The wolves were so well done, particularly jeven just the eyes glowing in the darkness, that when I stepped outside during a commercial break (my house is surrounded by woods) I was ever so slightly twiched about looking into the darkness myself!
I wish I had known to watch right through the credits - who does that when watching at home - so I was a little disappointed with the sudden ending, but appreciated this as being purposely ambiguous.
Would love to see it again.

Re: The Grey
Had not seen this before but had been told it was a great film. It was engrossing, the relationships or lack of then developing between them.
Don't like scary movies, and was a bit much with all the wolves, scared to put the lights out.
Was looking for a different ending, don't like being left to wonder.

Re: The Grey
Personally I didn't think that it was anywhere near as action packed as the misleading trailer promised and consequently I found it to be a surprisingly slow and uneventful film.drushe wrote:One of the most disappointing films I have seen in a very long time. It's more of a drama than anything else & I really do need to revisit it at some point to see if it's more enjoyable with significantly reduced action based expectations...
