Saw this at Shepherds Bush with the mysterious 10.15 start. Luckily I got there early.
I really enjoyed the film. A strong, entertaining Disney effort. Beautifully animated of course. There are some who may be disappointed by the decision not to stick to 2D hand-drawn style of animation like the previous Princess and the Frog but it still had all the typical charm of familiar Disney.
Often very funny too. Most impressive and refreshing was the fact that the comedy wasn't just given to the standard comedy sidekicks. Usually in animated films like this the lead characters are fairly bland whilst the characters around them get all the comedy. Thankfully the main characters get their fair share of the laughs too. Flynn was a winning mix of heroism and vanity, whilst Rapunzel was feisty, clumsy and naive at the same time. I particularly liked the scene where Rapunzel's feelings about getting out of the tower keep switching from elation to guilt. A beautifully played and very funny montage sequence. Not that the sidekicks suffered as a result though. Both Pascal the Chameleon and Maximus the Horse were hilarious too. Pascal in particular getting a great deal of laughs out of the slightest of changes in facial expression. The denizens of 'The Snuggly Duckling' were also very amusing.
The action scenes were also very exciting, involving and very well-paced.
The songs were okay, solid if not exactly memorable but definitely not unwelcome.
Thank god they made one significant change from the teaser trailer. In that Rapunzel's hair almost seem to have a life of it's own, getting Flynn to punch himself, picking up candlesticks etc. That always bothered me and thankfully those bits ending up getting cut (no pun intended).
If I have a criticism it's that the film does dip a little about 2/3rds of the way in and I found my interest going a little, but it does pick up again for a rousing finale.
Again the film would have been just as enjoyable without the 3D but I thought it actually worked pretty well here giving some impressive depth to some scenes. Though darker scenes suffered a little as a result.
A wonderful addition to the Disney collection and a fittingly entertaining way to celebrate it's 50th animated movie.
