I've been in binge/starve mode for quite some time so, today I'm really going to make a huge effort to take myself in hand. As I'm lazy, I'm afraid the only way I can do it is with Diet Chef. All the food is is in Microwave packs so there's no b*ying and getting tempted by stuff in the shops. YOu can add veg etc to the meals to bulk up as well.

I'm also attempting to give up smoking as well. I had my last one yesterday so fingers crossed.....................

Valda, that's fantastic! You are assessing your current habits and will do something about it to improve your healthy lifestyle, brilliant! o/ o/ o/

And you are not lazy. You will have fun eating healthier. When you go shopping, you will b*y quality food and a smaller ration of the sweet stuff you like for your reward day each week. Its going to be so enjoyable. In your mind you will be thinking, I am going to be so much more fitter and healthier as my shopping will be more healthier!

I'm sounding like a Jedi but you dont need any Jedi mind trick, to do this ;) Search your feelings, Luk..Valda, you know it is true. Because you are not lazy, the rewards are exciting, the journey will be fun. So you dont even need Diet Chef, you can do it better than those temporary diet fads. But if you do go with Diet Chef, please add more veggies to it because from what I have researched Diet Chef is way too low in calories. It appears the calories given is about 750kcal. Too low. If you were consuming about say, 2300kcal then you do not want to drop more than 500 at the most. Go step by step. This way you get to a point where your eating lifestyle can be maintained comfortably FOR LIFE. If you go drastic on a diet, not only will there be health repurcussions but there will be no way you can sustain the ideal weight reached for life. I challenge anyone who has been on such fad diets to say they have reached their desired weight AND sustained it after the fad dietary phase.

The key is to adopt a comfortable healthy lifestyle for life complemented with progressive exercises. 70% of losing fat is down to nutrition. 20% Physical Activity. Before anyone tells me I need to seriously brush up on my arithmatic, I know I missed 10%, and that is for Mental Positive Attitute ;)

So here is my recommendation, I dont know what your current eating habits are right now but make little changes here and there, and you will see results already in just 2 weeks.

1. Reduce the number of sugar you take in your tea. Dont substitute for artificial sweeteners, just reduce it. So if you take 2 teaspoons, take it down to one for the first 2-4 weeks. Then take half, then none! Trust me, the tea/coffee will taste great, even better imo because as the Tetley man says, aye the flaaavor floods owt. The sugar kills it!

2. Split your meals into 5 meals a day. This is biggest fat loss secret of all! This is mega. You see, by doing this your metabolism rate for fat burn increases. So just by eating the same quantity but splitting the meals evenly, you will burn more fat!!! So, breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, mid afternoon and dinner. DO not have your dinner any later than 7.30pm. If you find yourself pekish at night, then have a glass of milk, that will do the trick.

3 This correlates with number 2 but NEVER EVER go hungry or starve yourself for too long. You know what happens when you do? The body thinks there is a shortage of food so it switches into STARVATION mode. When it does this, your body metabolism decreases, so instead of losing fat, your body will be preserving the fat and use other sources of energy.

4. Swap sugary drinks for water. Or at least the low sugar versions. Try to drink the squash more diluted than before.

5. If you were using whole milk, substitute for semi-skimmed. If semi-skimmed, substitute for skimmed. Skimmed milk taste great, and even if you find it doesnt at first, its a mental, it will taste great after a little while. Altrernatively, if yo uwant to stick to semi-skimmed then half the amount.

6. Use only whites of eggs in your scramble eggs or omelettes or at least reduce the yolks.

7. Try count the calories but dont get obsessive. just make a consciounce effort where you think you can reduce.

8. Substitute chocolate snacks for a low fat cottage cheese with Rice cake (I found Rice Cake to be a brilliant, tasty and filling snack)

9. drink plenty of water (and tea is nearly a good substitute too, particularly, herb tea such as peppermint, green tea etc)

10. reduce your overall calorie intake by upto 500kcal but no more than that. Not only is it unhealthy to do so, your immunity system will decrease and when you have lost the weight, you will find yourself with loose skin. And I am pretty sure, you do not want that.

11. Substitute white bread for wholemeal. Dont be fooled by brown bread though, they are also refined and just as bad as white bread, the brown bread is just coloured brown!!. Wholegrain or wholemeal bread is what you want to be consuming from now on. Also, substitute white flour for wholgrain or wholemeal flour (again dont be fooled by brown flour, again its white flour coloured brown!). And finally, substitute white rice (and other special rice, such as basmati etc) for brown rice (no trick there, brown rice is real and unrefined!).

There are much more tips I can give. But notice the changes. Its all mostly substitions. Replace junk/refined food for wholesome food.

If you or anyone would like to detail what you eat in a typical 7 day diary and pm me, I will make amends to it. We all have our likes and dislikes, and we dont have to force ourselves to eat horrible stuff to become fitter and healthier. One exception is porridge. Oh man I hate porridge. But it really is so good for you. Diane actually advised me how to eat porridge but I forgot, so I revert to oat flakes! I think Oat Flakes is fine, but just plain oat flakes not with those added dried fruits etc because they contain a lot of sugar. Ideally I should also try to eat porridge. Diane, what was the best way again? Without adding 4 table spoons of sugar!

SMOKING

I am so glad you are going to give up smoking too. I was a heavy smoker several years ago. And when I stopped, wow my life changed. I could last much longer in a squash game due to the better utilisation of oxygen in my cardiac system. I found I was richer too! And above all I felt great about it. But I did one thing wrong. Very wrong. And I dont want you to make the same mistake.

Smoking is an addiction. And like all addictions, it must be ceased in the proper way. Stopping suddenly can have temporary repurcussions. You see, I stopped too suddenly. I became very agitated and somewhat aggressive even to my friends. They noticed and one of them told me something was wrong with me, while my other friends understandably didnt want to say anything. The craving for a cigarette was still there but I resisted and it screwed my mind up a bit. I think some people can stop suddenly and have no repurcussions but I wasnt one of them. You need to have a timeline plan. It wont take long, obviously the quicker the better but not too drastic.

I advise you strongly to do it the right way and not make the same mistake I did.

I think this website is a good first step too which is where I got the above number from

http://smokefree.nhs.uk/what-suits-me/n ... -helpline/

If anyone has successfully quit smoking in the proper way, please advise here what resources helped you. Maybe we should have a seperate thread for this because I am sure Valda is not the only one here who wants to quit smoking?

And that goes for all of you who are currently smoking. Give it up, folks. You will feel top of the world and free from the shackles when you've kicked it. You know its harmful to your lungs, shortening your life and risking yourself to cancer. I used to have regular cigarrette breaks at work fooling myself that I need to relieve stress from work or whatever. But that isnt the real reason. We smoke because our sytem seriously craves for the nicotine. We manifest it as an excuse to relieve work pressures. Give it up and you'll realise you never needed it!

I just have porridge made with skimmed milk to get my daily calcium and also a yoghurt at lunch time as I only drink water and black coffee so have no other or very little calcium.
Good Luck Valda with the smoking it must be really tough as I've never smoked or drank alcohol I have no idea what you are going through.
I too need to get my act together especially as I have already had 2 Christmas meals out and lots more to come  I haven't learnt the NO word as yet but eating loads of satsumas instead of chocolate (I've got none in the house) I always think of you MrGlass when I'm tempted it reminds me of the Nic o teen man who's always watching me when I'm tempted to stray ha ha!

On the subject of smoking, IF you have tried giving up on your own, in a group, through a health service or even with the help of patches yet STILL are struggling, I would recommend seeing a hypnotist.
My mom smoked for 22 years straight, and my family supported her the best we could when she decided to give up(her blood pressure was going through the roof!) yet even with all the help and support, shed always revert back, even after a year of being 'clean'.
She went to see a hypnotist, pa*d around £60, and now shes almost 14 years smoke free.
:)
But I wouldnt suggest it as an easy route because 1- it doesn't work on everyone, and 2- youll be a large amount of money out of pocket whether it works or not.

Thats a great result for your mother o/

But I would give the support group and NHS clinics a more positive outlook though. Its been such a long time, ago, and after all, your mother did quit for a whole year as a result, why she started again is a different story. But since then, I believe it has all been improved. Why? Because everyone around me has successfully quit smoking. Just one or 2 of my friends are still smokers and they too will try to quit because the success of the others are more than just encouraging. The went though programs of nicotine patches, some went to group supports as well but only some of them. Also, some had this book (I'll try to find out the name) which they praise so highly and swear to its contribution to their success. But whichever method they took, it bloody worked for them and they didnt suffer on their journey, just a little agitation here and there but not as bad as when I stopped abruptly.

Dont underestimate the power of achieving your goals amongst a group support. Whether it is to lose body fat, quit smoking, alcohal, having a group to give verbal support enables you to try even harder in achieving your goal because others want you to achieve it. Its powerful and to be honest, without you guys here, and my friends support, I dont think I would have got as far as I got.

Well done Diane, with your eating lifestyle :) I do hope however, your are eating a tad more than just a yogurt during lunch and not starving until dinner time? If so, consider distribute some calories off your main dinner towards your lunch period. And if you can (I know your restrictions at work), sneak in a quick mid morning and mid afternoon snack, without anyone looking, could be some walnuts, prunes, or rice cake, low fat cottage cheese etc. Of course balance out the total calories, you not adding more, just distributing more evenly as you can mange. How are the walks going? are they getting brisker ;)

Yeah I think the support groups have got alot more funding and support than when my mom was attending them, and I guess it depends on the people who also attend with you, as long as everyone supports each other, everyone should come out with a successful outcome :)

I think this thread is a perfect example of when a support system works.

Of course I eat more than just a yoghurt I would collapse in a heap if I didn't ;)
Now as for the walking well  what can I say I have slowed down but do need to up it again especially as the indulgence season is upon us.

Hi, my boss is on Diet Chef and is on his 37th Week. He was in excess of 25 stone and has to date lost 6 stone. The meals are excellent. I go and get him a weeks supply of salads and vegetables and he just adds to them. He has found at times that it has got boring and has had the odd cheat - however on the whole he has done so well. He recommended to others and 2 other people took on board and also lost substantial weight.

Good Luck x

WOW TheyCallMeMrGlass reading back through this thread you certainly know your stuff, I'd like to lose a half a stone and I know exactly where I'm going wrong but its changing the habits of a lifetime, I never eat breakfast just can face food for at least an hour or 2 after getting up so end up eating a couple of biscuits  to stop the tummy rubbles at break time! Will grab a sandwich if I'm home for lunch, if I have to go out it will be a bar of choc or packet of crisps  on the go, I'll then have a healthy dinner with the kids, but if I'm working the evening I'll be hungry again when I get in so it will be toast & jam or some biscuits before bed  ....not to mention the gallons of tea I drink!!

However I don't smoke but have seen some posts on this thread about people trying to give, this may be a little incentive for you based on a 5.70 per pack & a 20 a day habit (halve for 10, double for 40), by giving up you will save approx £39.90 per week, £171 per month, £1,043 per 6 months, £2,081 per year, £20,805 in 10 years & £41,610 in 20 years!!! Now have this pinned on my fridge hoping OH will finally take note!!
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!
