Meryl Streep did try to explain the focus on the "condition" rather than her life story on the blue carpet at the premiere last night

Beate, I think we may be more objective (at least we can see the movie as no more than a movie) than most of the Brits about this one.

I came to realise that today actually, when I was reading so many reviews trashing The Iron Lady, thinking about what would be my reaction if Sarko turned out as a likeable character in the upcoming movie. I would be very very upset about that! And this is also why I won't be watching it! (so if there is previews for that, please no ticket for me!)

I don't like Maggie Thatcher. And I didn't think the film is particuarly good, not because of the subject matter but because it's simply not a very interesting movie, it meanders back and forth, and apart from Meryl Streep's acting there isn't much that that is engaging. But I wouldn't protest against it. Reminds me when they protested against Temptation of Christ back when I was still living in Germany. Can't even remember the year.

I think part of it is that it get's their cause into the news. ;)

If you'd been protesting for 30 years and PR opportunity comes up to get some publicity for it you take it.

Just saw it... and I was truly disappointed.
The 'present'/flash backs scenes were confusing - not that I didn't get the story, but sometimes present scenes came out of nowhere and were useless, and vice-versa. I wished the historic facts were more developed (showing ten video of people fighting is not enough to show the struggle of that time, to my mind). I felt like it was rambling.
Meryl Streep acting saves it.

the protesting is certainly odd, although if any depiction of a politician demands it then its Maggie for the shit she stirred up that wasnt depicted. There were old men who died penniless in freezing homes and families that broke up because of her, and its wrong to depict secondary murderers as heroines.

Reminds me of the cafuffle over Clint Eastwood's Mandelas movie in 2010. A lot of people were VERY upset that Mandela was depicted as so saintly for his policy of forgiveness because, from what I gather, they missed out on retributive justice against their former oppressors. And I have to agree with that - the fcukers deserved to be jailed for their race hate! But I was deeply moved by Mandelas policy. A lot can depend on your point of view, I guess.

You could say there is a wealth of difference between the two - Mandela did it because hes was a forgiving person, but Maggie let people rot it because she could without losing the votes that she needed. One the saint, the other the sinner, but you can bet that they felt forced into taking their decision by the time and place they were in, regardless of their feeling/lack of it.

HAs to be said, If I hear another teenage Tory Boy at University cheering on Thatcher without understanding the horrors she caused then I may come close to decking them. :cross: good thing I am taking time out from uni.

I think almost all the reviews say great performance from Meryl but poor film. Has anyone seen a review saying poor performance from Meryl I wonder?
Too lazy to write reviews now for all films, other people write such elegant reviews! but it was 7/10 for me
