I agree with ladams888 that Charlize Theron was probably not the best lead for this. I think I expected something very special because she is in it.

yeah it was ok. I'd give it 3.5/5. I think I probably would p*y to see it, it was diverting. Mavis was unlikeable and she remained so even at the end....
the sister telling Mavis that she was the envy of the town and everyone else might as well be dead was a bit disconcerting as the rest of the film seemed to be 'look how happy everyone is with their simple lives', but she went away with the same self-importance she arrived with.
I think what made it work for me was that there was a bit of seriousness and this woman does clearly have a lot of issues, rather than her just being a pure evil homewrecker, but at the same time it didn't go completely over to the other side and become too sentimental and preachy.

Shaftersbury avenue was horrible! What a total mess that whole Tracedero is. And then the blimmin climb to the top! The cinema was really cramped. Yuk. Made me appreciate Holloway.

It seems a lot of people were expecting another bland cheesy comedy chick flick kinda thing! I'm glad it was "a little deeper" as ladams888 says. I didn't think it was that bad at all. The fact that the main character is unlikeable doesn't make it a bad film. Theron played it really well. Patton Oswalt was also really good as Matt, I enjoyed his interaction with Mavis. The one thing I didn't like was the protracted confrontation at the baby naming party, it seemed to go on forever. Extra points for featuring the Lemonheads' It's a Shame About Ray on the soundtrack! 7/10

(I wrote to Luke and had an almost immediate reply! I complained about Shaftesbury putting the previews in ridiculously tiny screens (5, 6 and 7 are less than 100 seats!) and as a result having to turn people away! He said he's taking the comment on board, so hopefully the next screening at Shaft shouldn't be so overbooked :D )

I thought this was a really good film, nothing like I was expecting at all. It dealt with mental health, alcoholism, depression and disability. Some of the character interaction was a bit flawed, but Charlie showed once again that she doesn't mind 'getting her hands dirty' by taking this role, and handled it with wit and intelligence. Teenage Fanclub on the soundtrack is also worth an extra point or two!!

For anyone going to the Times screening at Shepherds Bush this evening, may want to be aware there is a large fire at a dairy in the area and some local roads have been closed causing travel problems, so maybe wise to check your route.

Theron was really great in this.

Shame the same cannot be said for Cody's script.

I'm undecided whether I liked this film or not (my OH clearly didn't like it and was nudging me the whole way through to go but I was determined to see it to the end!)

The story certainly isn't conventional in terms of a romcom (but then I guess they've probably classed it as a dark comedy or something - comedy is the loose term though - as nothing in it was funny!). You tend to just come out the film feeling sorry for the Mavis that her life hasn't turned out to be the fairytale success story - but then in another sense, she appears to have been b*tch in high school so probably didn't deserve to be happy! It just makes you realise that not everything in life turns out how you expect or want it to and you just have to make the best of things where you can and not live in the past!

I'd probably give it a generous 2.5/5
