Swimming with Men

#1 Post by Beate » Fri Jul 06, 2018 8:22 pm

Saw this today at the Greenwich PH, purely to escape the heat. Only six other people had the same idea!

This is a nice, inoffensive British comedy about Rob Brydon joining a men's synchronised swimming team that just happened to have formed in his local pool, consisting of a Motley Crew of guys, and taking them to the championships in Milan.

It was ok, but it could have been a much better film, it had no suspense and the ending was rather silly.

But I did enjoy my two air-conditioned hours!

A perfectly pleasant way to spend an afternoon, but it doesn't quite reach the heights of it's fairly obvious inspiration - The Full Monty (Brydon himself has described it as 'The Pool Monty').

As well as being a long standing member of FMUK I work in the film industry, mainly as a background actor aka supporting artiste aka extra. In this one I am the USA team coach, seen fleetingly at the gala towards the end of the movie. Had a really enjoyable few days filming those scenes, and Brydon in particular was an absolute joy to work with.

Sadly it was a rather low budget effort and although the gala was set in Milan we filmed it in...Basildon.

I went to the premiere, thanks to ritamistry. We both loved it. It is a really lovely, feel good, gem of a film. In the intro, Rob Brydon, says "don't be distracted by their bodies"!

I learn later in the credits that it is based on a real-life synchro-swim team of middle-aged Swedes, and who make an appearace in the film.

Sorry, I missed you davewatts, I did not know you were in it, although, I looked out for sarahlrich's bf, but didn't see him. If I knew what characters you were, I may have been able to spot you both.

Tom Hardy created quite a stir when he turned up at the premiere, to support his wife, Charlotte Riley, who is their team coach in the film.
