Re: 500 Days of Summer
Hmmm hmm hmm...the concept piqued my interest and made me want to see the film, but I was hoping it'd go further than anti-rom-com. It did, but it left it pretty late. When it started it was obvious that the order of the scenes and their juxtaposition was clever, but they didn't flow together quite naturally and the title cards didn't help.
That said the film was excellent by its conclusion (there are no miracles), which I would argue for my life against but which I very much admired. And the film had its deeper moments, an understanding of Fellini (directly parodied at one point) and the line from 8 1/2 from which I take my rank title (Asa Nisi Masa).
The leads were great, JGL is getting better and better and Deschanel made good use of her role, despite us being explicitly told that she was every man's girl-of-your-dreams-next-door (unlike, say, lookalike Anna Friel in Pushing Daisies where it was unforced and doubly effective). I don't think the writer actually cared about his supporting characters, but Chloe Moretz was good as the wise-beyond-her-years sister - warming up for the ultraviolent-and-potty-mouthed-beyond-her-years vigilante in next year's Kick-Ass ("Okay you c**ts. Let's see what you can do.")
Anyway, getting a bit off-topic now, but suffice to say that the film didn't meet my expectations but at the same time it did. 7.75/10

Re: 500 Days of Summer
My daughters and I went to see this in Cardiff last night. Admittedly just before it gets released.
I've got to say that we really enjoyed it. I was wondering about the negative reviews and I think the whole idea about the character, Summer was that she had 'unusual' female ideas and we were not suppose to 'get' her. But I quite enjoyed that twist, in the fact that, he really fell for her and she couldn't commit. Personally I thought she was mad because Tom was gorgeous.....but you know, what do these kids know anyway.... hahaha!
On to the next one.

Re: 500 Days of Summer
I can't decide about this one (I'm often a love 'em or hate 'em kinda gal)... There's nothing wrong with it per se, although I didn't think much of the female leads acting - there's aloof and there's not bothering - but clearly I'm in the minority here. I love a good rom com, and though it claims to be an anti rom com, I'm not convinced, especially
given the ending. Oh and OMG how cheesy is her name! Talk about your classic rom com...
Like I say, there was nothing wrong with it and it was quite funny in places, I think I just expected more... I'd have liked to see something happen - and by that I mean perhaps more emphasis on
Summer getting married
or just something BIGGER! It was all a bit bland... That said I LOVED the little sister's character. Hilarious!
Anyway, I don't think I'd bother to see it again. As Kittycoocat says, on to the next one!

Re: 500 Days of Summer
Just back from it, had problems with getting a free screening, thought it was a Sunday week turned out it mashed with Funny People on the Tuesday, but the hype build was brilliant.
And I'm back and so happy that it matched all expectations, great script, acting, soundtrack, direction, really heartfelt and cynical, loved it. (10)/10

I have to say I really enjoyed this film. Thought it had some very clever film techniques and was different to your usual romcom. Thanks to phunkygal for posting the code that I used.

Re: 500 Days of Summer
Seems the first previews of this film were quite a while ago, I'm a little late on the feedback then. Anyway, the film...I couldn't remember on which day they first broke up (280 something I think??), so when the scenes bounced back and forth I couldn't tell if it was before or after the breakup until half way through the scene. It bugged a bit, other than that I really quite enjoyed it. Very fresh and feel good vibe!

Re: 500 Days of Summer
first review here,
have to say i agree with the general consensus of it being a little underwhelming. it was quirky and quite clever, but i never felt drawn into the story and didn't care enough about the characters to be overly interested in how it would end.
interesting idea, well directed and well made, but lacking that spark that makes films worth watching.
6.5/10

Strangely, this is one about which the critics seem more unanimous (and approving) than FMUK members. I'm still regretting missing my preview and will definitely have to p*y to see it a.s.a.p. if only to satisfy my curiosity.
