Aboutthe European Union Youth Orchestra
By Joy Bryer
Co-Founder and Secretary General
If Europe is to mean something substantial, it must be about more than economicactivity. There is a great need for the European Union to be perceived by thepublic, and especially the young, as more than a bureaucracy. The EUYO hasalways sought to enrich the lives of young musicians, to encourage cross-borderco-operation and to show the world the vibrant possibilities of a Europe unitedthrough a single language: music.
I am thrilled to be the ‘mother’ ofthousands of young people and I even have a great many ‘grandchildren’. Many ofthe young musicians have married, having met in the Orchestra, and we are thereforetruly the largest cultural family in Europe.
The EUYO is supported by the EuropeanUnion’s Culture Programme. The Orchestra’s Honorary President is Jerzy Buzek,President of the European Parliament. Our Honorary Patrons are headed by JoséManuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and include PresidentHerman Van Rompuy, Baroness Catherine Ashton and the Prime Ministers and Headsof State of the 27 EU Member States. European Commissioner Vassiliou heads theEUYO’s Honorary Committee, which is made up of the Foreign and CultureMinisters of the 27 EU Member States. To each and every one of them, for theirsupport, we owe a debt of gratitude.
