Not sure wether this should be a new thread but it is a full length feature film, its free and is produced by Ridley Scott, directed by Kevin McDonald (Last King of Scotland & Touching the Void)...and the Youtube community.

Its not premiering at the cinema but on our computer screens and laptops on Youtube from 1am tonight!

It is a fascinating experiment in which Ridley Scott and Kevin Mcdonald asked Youtube film makers all over the world to film their life in a day on 24th July 2010. They will then edit all footage into a film about a day in the life of Earth. It sounds like an experiment that is easily doomed to failure but it had a press release at the Sundance Film Festival resulting in applause during the end credits. (which is vey rare for press releases!)

This was in fact the film that was screened to close last night's SFF event. I was disappointed that it wasn't 13 Assassins but this is a lot better than it sounds.

It's essentially one big montage. Some film-makers' submissions pop up more than once during the course of the film, telling different stories. The footage comes from all corners of the globe and it was explained afterwards that they had even sent little HD cams and memory cards to some of the poorer regions of the world and were amazed to actually receive so much footage back, via the memory cards being returned to them. This allows the film to truly capture the diversity of life on any given day or in this case 24 July 2010.

The film is very upbeat, which I suppose surprised me less than it did the film-makers, as they had hoped for some darker footage and were surprised how upbeat it all was. From the outset, what I had in mind was the truth One Hour Photo explores- that people don't take photos of the awful things in their life. So there is no footage of anyone on their death bed or suffering in particular. However, there is footage from the Duisburg Love Parade and the stampede which killed 21 people. This feels a bit out of place, though, not just in tone, but in the fact that this footage feels much less personal than everything else and is sort of shoe-horned in.
For me one of the worst scenes was the slaughter of a cow, making me happy I'm a vegetarian, but sad that more people are not.

The film presents the audience with many images and stories of people overcoming obstacles- cancer, heart surgery, poverty, or war and celebrating life and love. The results are fascinating, which makes up for the lack of any actual story. It's a pretty fantastic documentary, even if it is fluffier than reality often is. 8/10

I was very disappointed that it wasn't 13 Assassins, and actually left the cinema after about 10 minutes, having stayed up some months back when it was streamed on youtube alongside it's Sundance premiere, and not enjoying it then either.
Not my cup of tea at all.

great idea, but i'll be dead long before its intended audience wow at it.

i admit i havent seen it, so I'm unfair to jugde..but its youtube videos, you know? no thanks.

Given that it was streamed online for free earlier in the year, I guess there's less demand for screening tickets

There are some VIP codes floating about for this. This means if you try to get tickets and you are not a VIP member it will tell you it's for invited guest list only. The codes that are on Free Films at the moment are for everyone, I have personally checked them! The others have been deleted again as they will just confuse people and might trigger chat.
