You absolute right, Valda. The way the food market operates with its marketing and selling is killing all of us. Its pure crap that is put on the shelves. Healthy cooking lessons in schools is a great solution. But its not too late for us either. Look at Diane, always learning new courses and I also try to learn more too, including cooking...I am a terrible cook but I try follow simple recipes and they come out alright. I plan to do a cookery course soon.valda wrote:I heard somewhere that the government were going to send familes on courses about eating properly and losing weight etc. The trouble is that you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink. I don't think some of these families know how to cook or make food from fresh. God knows I don't, well I do but I'm lazy. Being single I just don't bother.
Anyway, as long as you can b*y rubbish salt laden fat sodden food for peanuts, people will do that unfortunately. Why bother to get a chicken and cook from fresh when you can go to Chicken Cottage and b*y a bucket for a few £'s.
I think cooking and nutrition for boys and girls should be taught at school again, then maybe the next generation will break the cycle.

Re: Weight Watchers
The previous government maybe, but this governement is actaully planning to take away the funding they give to local councils for fruit for Key Stage 1 children and Key Stage 2 has already been withdrawn.
I don't know if it is the norm or just my kids school but they do have lessons on living a healthy lifestyle as part of PSHE. They also ran a free after school cooking class open to all the children in school from Reception through to Year 6, teaching them how to cook basic things from scratch. Unfortunately again funding got withdrawn and it was scaled back, there is now contribution and they have to limit the numbers but it is still very good.
We also have a Community Learning Partnership who amogst other things run basic cookery courses both within school and for parents/adults who want to take part as a short evening class, again this has been a free but they don't know yet if come September they will have funding for any of their courses.
Funding has also recently been removed from our local Sports Partnership programme, they basically arranged a lot of the sport children did in school and extra before/after school sports activities.

It so wrong that all of these great initiatives fall under the axe, not a nice government to be living underraineylb wrote:The previous government maybe, but this governement is actaully planning to take away the funding they give to local councils for fruit for Key Stage 1 children and Key Stage 2 has already been withdrawn.

Re: Weight Watchers
Yes I have to tackle it as it's my "Duty of Care" and I have to document the advice I have given, I just find it hard to approach the subject without upsetting the child. It's a tricky one as depending on who you refer onto it can be classed as child abuse the same as under feeding when more often than not they just need guidance, in my experience its not the ones who come from the more deprived areas but the more affluent ones who are too busy to spend time with the children and indulge them with treats. I'm not recommending teenage pregnancy's but they are the ones who tend to play/exercise with the children and cook traditional food I'm afraid to say it's the older parents who drive the children everywhere.TheyCallMeMrGlass wrote:I know you do Diane, but I also know you do so now again to treat yourself, after a good week of healthy, right?Diane65 wrote:I'm going on a course re obesity and tackling weight issues with patients which I always find awkward. I recently had a 10 year old patient who weighed 14 stone and the mum wanted to know what I was going to do about her painful feet (I changed the details a bit but its the same ration for patient confidentiality), how can they not see its simple law of physics!!
I too have to make sure I don't go to mad with food as it would be difficult to advise patients if I'm stuffing my face.
But Mr G I do like a bit of bling as well!!
I really like the job you doing because you have to set an example to patients and that itself is good for self motivation, dont you think?
That course sounds greatThat 10 year old patient's parents seriously need a GP's referral to a nutritionist and child fitness adviser, though! He/she is roughly twice the weight he/she should be
Do you have a right to make such suggestions to them? Or is it simply just awkward for you? Hopefully the course will help you with that
I've no idea if we have a child fitness advisor but if we don't we need one. I'll check up on what both Valda and raineylb have said as I'm not too sure what services have been withdrawn and what services are still available, thanks ladies and the gentleman for your advice.

Re: Weight Watchers
i eat so sporadically i'm suprised i have any metabolism at all again. some days i'm good some days im bad, i don't eat too many take aways or anything i much prefer "proper" food. but im addicted to chocolate more than i ever have been in my life! i try to swap it for muller rice but nothing beats a chocolate craving. i know i will be ok once i cut down and it's not like i eat it everyday but for me i eat it more often than i should!
I'm seriously unfit again. i'm doing the wii fit and although i have to cancel the gym as funds just can't be found anymore for it i've decided that as i'm going to get one of those little nike ipod walk things for my trainers and start walking either in the mornings or early evenings and i'll have a record of it for incentive to keep going! i HATE walking with a passion, it's so boring and it hurts all the bits of me that are painful enough allready but it is at least free even if it's painful and dull!
i guess i should give away at least some of my lindt bunnies later when i go to my mums. maybe i'll have one roast potato less too... or i might just ask for new potatoes and veg!
