The Don Sanche by Liszt
About the European Union Youth Orchestra By Joy Bryer Co-Founder and Secretary General
If Europe is to mean something substantial, it must be about more than economic activity. There is a great need for the European Union to be perceived by the public, and especially the young, as more than a bureaucracy. The EUYO has always sought to enrich the lives of young musicians, to encourage cross-border co-operation and to show the world the vibrant possibilities of a Europe united through a single language: music.
I am thrilled to be the ‘mother’ of thousands of young people and I even have a great many ‘grandchildren’. Many of the young musicians have married, having met in the Orchestra, and we are therefore truly the largest cultural family in Europe.
The EUYO is supported by the European Union’s Culture Programme. The Orchestra’s Honorary President is Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament. Our Honorary Patrons are headed by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and include President Herman Van Rompuy, Baroness Catherine Ashton and the Prime Ministers and Heads of State of the 27 EU Member States. European Commissioner Vassiliou heads the EUYO’s Honorary Committee, which is made up of the Foreign and Culture Ministers of the 27 EU Member States. To each and every one of them, for their support, we owe a debt of gratitude.

The BP Summer Screen at Trafalgar Square events take place from 7.30pm on Wednesday 1st June, Monday 4th July and Wednesday 13th July 2011. Admission is free and on a first come, first served basis.
Also at Canary Wharf in Canada Square.
Get ready to see world class opera and ballet performances beamed live from the Royal Opera House onto the BP Summer Screen at Trafalgar Square. Part of a series of open air live screenings taking place across London and the rest of the UK, this outdoor event is always a popular affair.
Free cultural event
Regardless of whether you're a die hard ballet and opera fan or a newcomer to the genres, the BP Summer Screen at Trafalgar Square gives you the chance to soak up some accomplished performances and hopefully a few rays of dwindling evening sun too. Better yet, the outdoor screenings are completely free to attend.
2011 season
The 2011 season of events on the BP Summer Screen at Trafalgar Square starts with a live screening of the Royal Ballet production of Manon, based on a 1731 story by French writer Abbé Antoine-François Prévost. Choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, the ballet tells the story of a fateful love affair between a poor student and a beautiful flirt who chooses a life of luxury over true love, to her eventual downfall.
Live opera and ballet
Also appearing on the BP Summer Screen at Trafalgar Square is the acclaimed opera by Puccini, Madama Butterfly, which tells the tale of a young geisha abandoned by her American husband. The final screening to take place is Massenet's opera Cindrillon, first performed in 1899.
Programme of events
The programme of screenings at the BP Summer Screen at Trafalgar Square look like this:
7.30pm, Wednesday 1st June
Manon
7.30pm, Monday 4th July
Madam Butterfly
7.30pm, Wednesday 13th July
Cinderella
Edit: Manon is not showing at Canary Wharf and more details of other places in jeamcomp's post below, which cliveas did pm me about last night, but I had gone to bed! Thanks cliveas/jeancomp!
