Are you set on the Nokia? They are not what they used to be, definitely fell behind many other manufacturers... The last Nokia phone I had was the express music, which was supposed to be Nokia's answer to iphone. All I can say about that statement is muhahahahahahaha...

I would definitely recommend a phone on the android operating system and as far as I know Nokia don't have one, but I might be wrong. Android is user friendly, customizable, tons and tons of free apps and lots of support in the online community and many phones run it, so if you switch between phones you don't have to get used to a new OS.

My humble opinion is to go with an HTC (all of them are good, the first 4 phones in UK top 5 phones for 2010 were different HTCs and iphone had the 5th spot) or Samsung Galaxy. HTC just launched/are launching their newest phones, which means you can get a great deal on the old ones (and by old I mean released in 2009/2010, not some ancient pieces of crap).
The HTC Desire S is one of the new phones and therefore the price of HTC Desire (the older version) should be very very very good at the moment (and get even better in the very near future), maybe around £250 - and considering it was voted phone of 2010 - definitely a good deal.
Sorry I didn't say much about Nokia, totally went off topic...

Totally agree with denichka. However, if you are a Nokia devotee no matter what, you might like to consider the N8. One piece of hardware this Nokia phone has better than the competition is a great camera at 12mp with a Carl Zeiss lens and xenon flash. But we are talking touchscreens. Perhaps touchscreen phones is not what you desire, just the old school traditional button handsets. In which case you might want to go for the X2 which is also a good camera and mp3 player to boot. And the X3 is a fashionable update to the X2. They also have the Blackberry style keyboard phone in the E72. If its one thing I like about Nokia, they do care about their customers and continuously releases firmware updates to fix known issues.

But in terms of operating systems, Nokia's Symbia series is on death row. There will still be apps made but nothing compared to the Android/Iphone markets.

Does anyone have experience with ordering a phone and singing up for a mobile contract online? I've only been on a contract since I started mine with Three which is now up and I did it instore. I'm thinking of going for a T-Mobile offer and I would get cashback if I do it online. Is it as straightforward as it would be in the shop other than having to wait to receive your phone?

I signed up for my 2 year O2 contract and phone online last March, didn't have any problems, took me less than 10 minutes. Phone arrived via DHL. I actually found signing up in store for my Orange contract years ago more of a hassle.

I upgraded my 02 contact online last year and found it pretty simple. My only regret is that I hate my phone and I am now stuck in a 24 month contract.

When my phone stopped working a few weeks ago, I took into an 02 shop for repair with no trouble and they loaned me a temporary replacement phone.

The benefit of signing up in store is you can look at the phones and ask the store assistants any questions.

According to me, the best course of action is

- look phones up online, read reviews etc (The Modaco forum is very helpful)
- go check out how they look in store, maybe ask questions
- make a decision and and then sign up online

More often than not sales people have no clue and only pretend they do... If you don't know better you can end up relying on the opinion of a biased (they have targets on contracts and phones I believe) and clueless salesman. Plus the phone you want might not be in stock in the store you go to. Even if you sign up in store - always consult the online community first is my advice.
