We have a few complimentary tickets to Orchestre des Barbes TONIGHT
for more information or to download tickets: www.showfilmfirst.com and enter code 564405

Orchestre National de Barbes
Showfilmfirst vouchers should be redeemed at the main Box Office between 6.30 and 7pm. Please check at Box Office when picking up tickets actual start time for National de Barbes.

PLEASE NOTE THESE TICKETS ARE STANDING ONLY

Super French/North African Band Orchestre National de Barbes comes to indigO2 for the first time on 25 May!

The opening number, “Sidi Yahia-bnef Paris”, effortlessly mixes elements of Gnawa trance with a low-slung growling rock riff that the Clash’s Mick Jones would have been proud of, and a simple swinging hip-hop rhythm. It’s not the first time we’ve heard this kind of fusion of rai, rock and hip-hop, but it’s rare to hear the executed with the kind of apparently effortless swagger that only a band with real chemistry can pull off. Then it’s straight into “Chkoun”, a rather more generic Ska number that could have been performed by any of the band from St Ives or St Petersburg. But then “No No No” has the breezy laissez-faire spring in its step of those Marseille gentlemen Moussu T, and “Chorfa” takes the solid rock-steady path.

But it’s an indication that this ten-piece band from the Barbes district of Paris are at the top of their game because they can dabble in a dozen different styles, yet still have their own distinct sound which is recognisable after only a few bars. Having been fairly quiet for almost ten years, they returned in 2008 with the confident and high-spirited Alik and Rendez–vous Barbes consolidates that return with its jaunty, agreeably rough-round the edge rowdiness. Long may they continue to mix Middle Eastern and African grooves with Parisian panache and bravado. It’s rare for music to be this fun without for one moment becoming superficial. Fans of both Rachid Taha and Les Negresses Vertes should investigate.

Supporting Orchestre National de Barbes are two brilliant artists. DJ U-Cef - Morocco/UK, "U-Cef's potential is as limitless as the Sahara" (Chris Nickson, All Music Guide) and Los Desterrados. Los Desterrados re-invigorate the traditional songs of the Sephardic Jews of the Mediterranean with a unique and electic mix of exhilarating North African, Balkan and flamenco beats that tug the heartstrings and make feet stomp at the same time!

US/UK Exchange: 7 short plays by the best emerging US artists, The Old Vic.

50 of New York's top emerging theatre artists are coming to London as part of The Old Vic’s 2011 TS Eliot US/UK Exchange programme and presenting seven new short plays on The Old Vic stage.  From college graduation angst to the perils of living in the world's most famous metropolis, the plays offer a series of contrasting, tragic-comic perspectives on life in America.

The performances take place on Friday 3rd June at 3pm.  Tickets are free and can be reserved by emailing exchangetickets@oldvictheatre.com.

For more information about the performances, see
For more information, see http://www.oldvictheatre.com/ovnv/usuk2011/.

The TS Eliot US/UK Exchange is a unique programme designed to nurture the best young British and American theatre practitioners. Supported by the T.S. Eliot Estate, and hosted in partnership with The Vineyard Theatre in Manhattan, the programme offers 21-30 year old artists the unrivalled opportunity to engage in a week of cultural activity and artistic development, culminating in a showcase of original work on The Old Vic’s 193-year old stage.

Kevin Spacey, Artistic Director at The Old Vic said: “The TS Eliot US/UK Exchange shows The Old Vic’s dedication to encouraging transatlantic collaboration. Last year’s programme was an extraordinary success and we have found another exciting team to forge lasting creative partnerships across the Atlantic.  There is no doubt that relationships created on this project will bear fruit for many years to come."
