Oh yes FMUK was represented at the Old Vic today. Great to see jeancomp, cliveas and kaybeelon. We had a bit of a wait and then got to choose seats in the stalls. They checked off names in the foyer but no one was given any tickets so you could have just turned up and got a seat. There were 7 short ten minute plays and I had a really enjoyable time. The audience was very enthusiastic -- full of friends and many in the business and the last play about networking at a party seemed to strike a chord amongst many of them. I may have been one of the few who understood the references to Cornell and the t-shirt Ithaca is Gorges as I spent two years there getting my MA a long time ago.

As usual, I was grateful to the Old Vic for offering up tickets.

I went to see Freerun at Udderbelly last week. This is meant to be their headline show for this summer. On paper it was pretty much a no-brainer for the head-honchos at Southbank Centre to commission, as there's always lots of free-runners (is that the right term?) jumping around the concrete blocks of the Southbank, so it was suppose to bring that unique "Southbank" experience to the crowds.
However it really didn't feel right stretching this act into a theatre show, it was basically 50 mins of watching a group of youngsters jumping up and down various obstacles. You can't help but feel they were trying hard to perform acrobatics, but they were not professional gymnasts. The martial arts was just embarrassing, it was similar to those 2 girls who performed martial arts on BGT, but on this theatre show they were worse.
Here's a click of some free-runners doing their routines around the southbank:

You have to say it's probably more exciting watching them in the open air than in an enclosed theatre with fake props and obstacles. Maybe they could have done the show as a promenade theatre outside of the Southbank centre.

The choreography was pretty bad too, why would you position any acts directly above and behind the audience's heads for significant parts of the show. It was very difficult to see what was going on.

The plus points was the the video wall and the music, it's probably where most of the budget went to. The video wall had nice montages of the southbank centre area.

The show did pick up significantly during the extended encore sequence, when you could see the characters and personalities of the performers shine through. They got people from the audience to come on stage and they had to jump over the audience members

A Valiant, but flawed 4/10

I didn't realise that I had a "local" cultural expert alongside me - that could have been useful!

I also thought it was highly enjoyable. A couple of the plays seemed to have promise for expansion into longer works but some of those that perhaps didn't were very entertaining in their short form. The last one was very funny as was "Lost Cause"; good musically as well - loved the Blue Oyster Cult.

Until recently I was getting direct emails from showfilmfirst about theatre, concerts and comedy gigs but since my account was deleted I have not received the latest ones that have been posted on the no chat thread. Out of curiosity, are you all still getting these emails?

i got the kings place comedy one, about the same time it appeared here. I have just upgraded to the Vip membership. Does anyone know how you can tell if the email is for vip members only? Does it say it on it somewhere? I'm not sure if i have had anything yet as a result of upgrading and i wouldn't know if its worth the money.

Thanks, I was wondering if it was just me. Have you had your account deleted recently as well?

My account has not been deleted but it's been ages since I received any of the e-mails too. Nowadays most of the codes get posted to their Twitter or Facebook.
