The Skin I Live In
The Skin I Live In
Curzon is inviting applications to attend 2 free members' previews but having checked IMDB, I find the film sounds so repellent that I shall steer well clear of it. I think you'd need a very strong stomach... which is why I shan't post any more here; I'll leave that to others if they wish.

Re: The Skin I Live In
Saw this last night.
It's quite an impressive film but it definitely won't be to everyone's taste. It's a very surreal, macabre and occasionally disturbing film.
It's beautifully shot with a wonderful use of music, both with composer Alberto Iglesias's score and the extra music, including the formidable Spanish singer Concha Buika who appears and sings two songs in a key flashback scene.
Antonio Banderas is excellent as the sinister doctor as is Elena Anaya in the more difficult role of Vera.
It has a big secret that critics have been asked not to reveal. All I'll say is that it became apparent to me about halfway through. At first I wasn't sure if Almodovar was really going to go there (I haven't read the story it's based on so I don't know if it's the same) but after a while it becomes pretty obvious that he is. It's quite an out there twist but I'm sure a lot of audience will find it difficult to swallow.
It's also very impressive how Almodovar manages to bring across several influences but at the same time it's unmistakably a film of his. Similarities to Hitchcock, Bunuel and Franju (Eyes Without a Face) are obvious but never at the expense of his own style.
Fans of Almodovar will probably lap it up but general audiences may find it a little too bizarre. It's oddness will probably be quite alienating for some. God knows how it will go down at Somerset House at the end of the month. Frankly it's as mad as a box of frogs.

The Skin I live in
I saw the trailer for this before Beginners recently and thought wow this looks dramatic. Looks like an exciting one from Pedro Almodóvar

I thought this was based on the Malorie Blackman book but look interesting enough anyway.

Re: The Skin I Live In
Anyone watched it Somerset House or have tickets next week? I am quite curious about this film.
Btw I think there's 3 separate threads for this film now, no?

Re: The Skin I live in
Holy shit.
This film. Wow. Totally mental, but absolutely brilliant. It's best to not read about this and just go see it. Banderas is magnificent in the role and I was pretty much on the edge of my seat, at times in disbelief.
There are a few hang-ups I have, but nothing too serious. I highly recommend it, but be prepared for a very strange journey. 9/10

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.
