I went to see this today, using one of my free Odeon tickets. As I was getting my ticket, I engaged the young man in conversation and asked him if he'd seen it. Oh yes he had, came the reply, and he said how good it was - (good salesman). I then asked if he'd read the book, and he answered that he had, but the film was nothing like the book and that Oscar Wilde would be turning in his grave!
So in I went.....with my chocolate covered popcorn. What was I going to make of it?
Well, I thought it was rather well done to be honest, and although it lacked the depth and gravitas that I'd been expecting, it did a reasonable job of moving from innocence to downright wickedness. Ben Barnes was not quite right for the role of Dorian Grey, in my opinion - still too lightweight. Colin Firth added what was needed, though he seemed to be the only member of the cast who did.
It's several years since I read he book - time to re-visit it I think.
What would Oscar Wilde have made of this film? Probably he would have loved it! (especially the wild (pun-intended) orgies and brothel scenes, not to mention the homosexual undercurrents, and indeed kissing, which were so frowned upon during the time when he wrote his book.
7/10 from me
