Cell 211

#1 Post by kevinknapman » Fri Jul 15, 2011 9:35 pm

As I saw this a couple of months ago and there hasn't been a page created for this I guess I better do so, seeing as it's released in cinemas today.

Excellent prison thriller about Juan who decides to get a tour of a prison the day before he starts his new job there as a guard. Getting hit on the head by a piece of falling masonry he's put into the empty cell 211. When a riot breaks out and his new colleagues abandon him, Juan has to think fast and pretend he is a new prisoner. He manages to fool the other prisoners and soon gains the trust of the leader of the riots Malamadre. Can he use all his wits to gain his freedom and get back to his pregnant wife.

Though it does sound a bit high-concept (it's been referred to as 'Die Hard meets A Prophet'), there's more to Cell 211 than meets the eye. Unpredictable and gripping it's also very well acted by Alberto Ammann and Luis Tosar as Juan and Malamadre.
It can be a little implausible at times but if you have any interest in prison films then this is definitely one worth checking out.

I saw the trailer for this recently and it looks quite exciting. Not sure about the tagline "Diehard meets A Prophet" though

Another one of Total Film's lazy and fairly inaccurate descriptions. They just seem addicted to getting their quotes on posters any way possible. Still I suppose it's slightly better than their 'Children of Men meets Taxi Driver' one for The Veteran.

I don't really see the Die Hard crowd and the A Prophet crowd particularly getting along lol...

I saw this last week, courtesy of the London Spanish Film Festival at the Cine Luminere. A very powerful prison film, gripping and dramatic. Great performances from the leads. It is quite like The Prophet, which I also enjoyed. They both kept me on the edge of my seat and had me thinking about it for days afterwards. 8/10
