9.5/10

Fantastically written, Super 8 comes straight out of the Spielberg School of Economical Storytelling. And while it doesn't go for meditation on the meaning of life or the meaning of meaning as Close Encounters did in its semi-pre-emptive genre deconstruction, it's still a fantastic genre piece.
On the one hand, the small-scale story of a boy who's lost his mother, estranged from his father and awkwardly entering puberty (all Oedipal themes fully present) - emotionally underplayed yet obviously tremendously affecting. On the other hand, the chaotic barrage of destruction that perfectly compliments the drama, externally conveying sheer confusion and terror. Basically, the sci-fi supports the drama. Beautifully.

Well, total hokum and I'm definitely not in the target audience, BUT the train crash sequence did remind me of the Oceanic 815 crash in Lost (and not just because of JJ Abrams) and the kids were good compared to most child actors, especially Joe and Alice.

Lovely to see Beate and OH- I'm sorry for my lack of posting, Beate, but I haven't been to the cinema in ages!

Saw this at a full Braehead in Glasgow. In fact it was almost full by 18:10 which is pretty unusual for a Glasgow showing. Guess it is the summer holidays.

Not sure if I really love it. I think I expected more cos I read everyone's reviews from last week. Whilst I can understand people's comparisons of Stand by me, ET, The Goonies in this film. Those films were those I grew up with and saw repeated as a child/teenager. So any film must be awesome to equal their standards and this just didn't quite hit the high standards. The train crash was one of the best I have seen and I thought the film would continue like this. However I felt it slow right down and whilst the young actors and actress did a pretty good job, they just weren't likeable as a group for me. The tall one who was the main character in their film just annoy me with his whininess. Then the film just finishes abruptly for me. Thought the ir film in the end was worth waiting for. 6/10

They are quite hidden and can't be the best seats on earth, what with the barrier in front.

p*ying customers, non p*ying customers, I don't think anyone should get that kind of treatment at a cinema
LOl you won't be sitting you'll be standing in a queue

I hope my mates got in, I've not heard anything from them. :cross:

As for Whitely's, I've had friends turned away, and I've also seen quite often ushers looking to see how many seats are left. I guess it all depends on how much the ushers care about their jobs
