dovetail wrote:Super 8 is the film or film format the kids were using to shoot their movie. It's made by Kodak and was the main technology used by amateur film makers before video. When Spielberg was a kid, he used to make films (like the kids in this film, with staged wrecks involving toy trains!) and charge 25 cents for admission. I suspect JJ Abrams was the same when he was a kid- I certainly felt that the movie was, in a huge part, an affectionate look at their own childhood experiences in making movies.
Yep. Abrams and the film's cinematographer, a hero and acquaintance of mine, Larry Fong, met as teens at a Super 8 film festival just like the one the kids enter in the film. Super 8 is like a nostalgic autobiography.
There's a great feature on various directors' Super 8 work in the last issue of Empire.

I'm a nineties teen, so the title is lost on me but the movie is still great. But have to say all these comparisons have convinced me to see Stand by me now.

"Stand By Me" is an infinitely better movie.

Wouldn't expect anything less of an FMUK recommendation.

i always thought Stand By Me was somewhat overrated. Its fine, but as a film and plot its fairly stragithforward.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

I suppose calling one movie better than another would be unfair as it ultimately comes down to subjectivity. I therefore retract my statement

I found Stand By Me pretty boring.

I really enjoyed seeing this at a packed screening at Printworks Manchester last night.
It was also nice to meet fellow FMUKer Diane65 at last, we have been going to the same screenings for ages and thankfully she introduced herself to me.

Very nice to meet you and hopefully will speak at future screenings,
