Mixed reviews from fmukkers, but still wish my screening hadn't been cancelled. Would have liked to have seen this one as am a big City of God fan. Ah well, will have to p*y for this one, I guess.

Saw this in Glasgow Braehead tonight and was surprised at how few people turned up for this one. Only 20-30% full and a few of those left shortly after the start, probably when they realised it was not in English. I was in such a hurry when I booked the tickets I myself didn't actually realise it was subtitled till I got there and probably wouldn't have gone if I had known! Therefore I am glad I did NOT know it was subtitled as the film, tho violent in places, was very good and quite gripping. Thoroughly enjoyed it, the script and the acting were believable. Enjoyed the main character and his understated way. My father who is a slower reader found he was so busy reading the subtitles, which were not short and were on and off screen at a fairly fast rate, found that in order not to miss reading anything he never had much time to actually look at the rest of the screen to see who was actually speaking which line! However, despite my initial reservations about the topic and the language, I thought it was well done, the time for me passed quickly and I tho I never saw the first film I would definately go to see any future sequel.

In my humble opinion it's worth seeing.

Anyway, the film was a disappointment for me. Not surprised several people walked out. Shouty and brutal story of police corruption in Rio, with too much violence, characters you hardly care about, no emotional impact, annoying voiceover and constant shaky camera action that just annoyed me. It did get somewhat more interesting in the last half hour, but all those great reviews are undeserved and were probably pa*d for by the "mafia" portrayed in the film. The human rights guy was the only actor with an ounce of personality and charisma.

Poor... 4/10
Ha - thanks for that and well said! If OH had written a review, his well-balanced opinion would have been that this was "the biggest sh*t ever". :giggle:

For what it's worth I did enjoy this although it was quite an ordeal. I am one of those that finds reading subtitles and thus missing who said what line rather difficult (and that's not because I have any language, reading or comrehension difficulties). I think it is just the speed at which they go at and that they distract you from the rest of the screen. Also as has been mentioned the monotonous tone of the voiceover was very distracting as well, not to mention so loud.

Lots of good action and a damn good yarn. Also an eye-opener as far as Brazil is concerned.

I agree about the voiceover, but not really the rest - particularly if you treat it as the sequel it is. For example the character Andre had a much bigger role in the first film and if you had seen him join up and the things that he went through in that one then I think you would have been more affected by his circumstances in this one. Similarly although Fabio mentions at one point that Andre had saved his life if you had seen that incident and how Andre and another rookie had risked almost certain death you might have been more interested in their relationship in this one.
Yeah I suppose, but I haven't seen the first one, and this sequel just didn't grab me. Happy to see at least some of you liked it though! I think I was expecting a different kind of film really, hence my disappointment.

I saw this at the Metro Centre last night. Both the OH & me thought it was a fantastic film; very gripping and well-acted. The subtitles weren't a problem, I'd rather watch a film with subtitles than have some rubbish dubbing or wait until the Hollywood remake is out. I'm not sure that the film was exactly the cup of tea of the Telegraph target market though - ha ha - it was pretty brutal in parts and there were a few walk-outs.

9 out of 10 from us!

Another difficult film to watch, not because of the subtitles, but because of the topic of the film. After watching Project Nim, The Interrupters, The Devils Double and this film in the last 3 days I am emotionally drained by the pain and violence of these films.

Taking out the violence I would give the film 7/10 for the story and action

Looking forward to a light-hearted film - Beautiful Lies - romcom

If you thought this was violent, you should've seen the first "Tropa De Elite". I'm still not sure which one I preferred personally. I loved the fast-paced nature of the first one, but thought the narrative was very scattered. This one had far less action and focused instead on bureacratic corruption...but it had a clearer narrative. I think I'd give the first one a 7.5, and this one a 7.
