when I saw the trailer for this at the cinema the other day I couldn't help but imagine it pitching it to the orange blokes.. probably starting off as a normal cowboy film...

Although I b*ght my tickets for Cowboys ana Aliens at Big Screen yesterday, I also won a pair, at the event....so I will cheekily use one of the free tickets to add to my free preview tally :P

I already gave my brief thoughts on it on th Big Screen thread so I will just summarise here. Enjoyable performances from the main leads (Craig is super cool), funky storyline in a silly genre mash up way, but ultimately forgettable not helped by unimaginatively poor dialogue

It is strange to see James Bond and Indiana Jones on screen together in what is actually a rather bizarre film.

The film opens well and the final action sequences are entertaining but it really blunders along in the middle act. I tend not to like cowboy films (although I did enjoy True Grit) and the most successful scenes of the film are in the first act, when Daniel Craig stumbles into Absolution. Once the alien invasion begins, things really go downhill.

There are so many gaping plothotes that it is ridiculous. Too much of the story is meant to be accepted as fact and never explained. The main problems are that
It is never explained why the aliens are there. All we know is they want the gold. But why?
Olivia Wilde's character - makes no sense. She is some kind of alien or creature but this is never explained. Jake just accepts she is from another world and never questions it. Then she manages to come back from the dead.
Supposedly the Aliens prefer the dark yet they easily overpower the cowboys and Indians in broad daylight at the end.
Harrison's Ford character starts off as thug/bully and then suddenly becomes a hero with good intentions.
The aliens look decent, the cowboys scenes are good and the performances are great (especially Ford) but the film really loses its way once the aliens arrive and blunders along until the climax. 5/10.

Not really, this was taking itself totally seriously while WWW played it very tongue in cheek. But good film to bring up in comparison, I forgot about that film, another genre mixing movie that was an likeably interesting failure.

Though I'll put up a more comprehensive review tomorrow, for now I will say it was an enoyable (if not instantly forgettable) film.

Daniel Craig's best performance since Casino Royale and certainly a better performance for Harrison Ford than in Indiana Joones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

6/10
