Lewisham Literary Festival

In the wake of library closures and local unrest, Lewisham Lit Fest waves a bookish flag for community spirit and local initiative, promising to put the emphasis on the festival rather than the literary. That said, the programme is astonishing, packed with well known writers, fun events and plenty for kids and families. There’s also rich pickings for the Londonist reader, as we’ve been gladly roped in to help out with some suitably Londony listings. Diaries at the ready:

Arrive early or bearing homemade cake if you want to be sure to get into the Firestation Book Swap on Friday 9 September.

Rachel herself brings the publishers of Mustard, Ambit and Smoke: A London Peculiar together on Saturday 10 September.

Parents should check out all the fab free kids’ events happening during the day on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September.

‘Submarine’ author Joe Dunthorne and author of ‘The Canal‘, Lee Rourke appear together on Sunday 11 September.

Skeptics in the Pub join the fun on Wednesday 14 September discussing ‘Science is Stranger Than Fiction’.

Londonist Editor, Matt Brown hosts About London on Thursday 15 September, chatting to Mark Mason, Paul Talling and Iphgenia Baal about their latest books.

This other Londonist Editor will try not to get tongue-tied introducing seven brilliant performance poets, also on Thursday 15 September.

The super Tall Tales concludes the festival on Friday 16 September with comedy, music and storytelling for grown-ups.

Disney Princess Parade - 2 October 2011 - Kensington Gardens

Rapunzel will be officially welcomed as the 10th Disney Princess at an invitation-only star studded celebration at Kensington Palace, London on 2 October 2011. On this pink letter day, Rapunzel will join the Disney Princess royal court, which includes Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White and Tiana, along with VIPs, celebrities and little princesses from across the globe. Kensington Palace is the perfect location for this magical welcoming ceremony of Rapunzel as it has been home to many real life Princesses over the centuries.

Before the start of the event there will be a Disney Princess horse drawn carriage procession through Kensington Gardens which everyone can attend for free and without a ticket. This is the very first time a Disney procession will take place in central London so make sure the date is in your diary. The procession will start at 1pm at Queen’s Gate and finish at 1:30pm at Kensington Palace. The best place to stand to watch the Disney Princesses is along Mount Walk, near Kensington Palace. Everyone is welcome! See Parade Map for more details.

Slow Tech: Designs for Digital Downtime

Location: 18 Hewett Street - 18:00-22:00

For this year’s London Design Festival, Protein has teamed up with Wallpaper* magazine’s Editor-at-Large Henrietta Thompson to create an exhibition called Slow Tech that explores the importance of digital downtime. The show will feature exclusive prototype designs by 10 established and upcoming designers, including Hugo Eccles, Héctor Serrano, Samuel Wilkinson and Nik Roope. London-based design consultancy Kiwi&Pom will be contributing a couple of concepts as well as being responsible for the exhibition layout and treatment.

The exhibition opens on the 17th September and will run until the end of London Design Festival. We’re hosting a late night opening on Tuesday 20th September, so stop by, have a look at the show and share a free beer with us. Oh, there will also be hand-rolled fresh gourmet pizza from these guys: www.homeslicepizza.co.uk

Expect 3 different pizza's by the slice:
