Resistance

#1 Post by Beate » Tue Sep 20, 2011 4:56 pm

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1391116/

I saw this film end of January in a test screening.

The film was half in German (with subtitles of course). Andrea Riseborough (Rose from Brighton Rock) was really good and looked so much older in this role, and Tom Wlaschiha who played the German Captain was great, though his English was almost too perfect for a WWII German soldier. Michael Sheen and Kimberley Nixon were quite wasted though in tiny roles.

The problem with the film was that there wasn't that much going on and that the "Resistance" title falsely suggested action that never came. So I wrote in the questionnaire that it was "interesting but ultimately not satisfying". I also did not understand the ending (which they might have anticipated as one of the questions was whether I found anything confusing), and the characters were not fully explored as we never really learnt of their life before the men left or before they came to the valley. I do like films steeped in history (although this one was obviously a made-up story about a German invasion that never happened) so I wasn't bored and the film didn't overstay its welcome.

I would like to know whether they changed anything! Interesting to see that they are touring the Cambridge Film Festival with it, I think the general release date is still a few months away.

It would be interesting to compare the test version with the final one but I don't think I could sit through it again in case it was still as depressing. Would be keen to read others' reports though.

There's a film festival going on in Cambridge and that's why there's a screening, it's still a long way off from it's release so it's probably why you can't find one.

I'd love to know if it has changed since the version some of us saw earlier this year and if so, how, but unfortunately there's only one way to find out!
