Yay - My son is now officially an FA Referee and will be taking on his first game this Saturday for the U13s.

Fingers crossed the players are nice to him!

well done to your son its a hard job being a ref, even at the lower ages its not just the players you need to worry about being nice adults on the touchline can be worse!

I have to to honest I am probably more worried about the parents and feel certain that I am likely to go over and punch someone if they abuse my son!

When my son said he wanted to do it I was pretty shocked as he loves to play, can occasionally have a quick temper and on more than one occasion has moaned about referees so couldn't see how it would suit him. Hopefully it will be good for his own game to see it from the other side. The best bit is that it is a good little part-time job (not too many around these days for soon to be 15 year old) which pays a decent amount without him being up and out of the house early in the morning etc and doesn't interfere with school work.

destresserai how is your son getting on being a ref? hopefully he isn't getting much abuse. am sure it will be great for his game and he will be able to control his temper. He may even be able to correct the ref that is doing his game. your so true about it being a good part time job and it is an area which is getting a lot of money invested to produce good proffesionals to do the job at the top level especially for his age as most look at only the playing. the earlier they start the more experience they get and can move up the leagues quicker at a younger age.

My son is really enjoying it (and the money even more). He has not had too many problems so far but in his second game the 2 managers stormed onto the pitch and started arguing. I was already to wade in when my son sent the home manager off the pitch and explained calmly to the away manager that he would not tolerate such behaviour and if he continued (he was swearing alot) he would have no alternative but to abandon the game! I wanted to cheer and was really pleased when the away manager politely apologised and didn't say another thing for the rest of the game. As all managers have to grade the ref my son was really worried that he might get a bad rating but both managers rated him an 8 out of 10! A few of the parents even took the time to come over to him at the end of the game to say well done.

He has now been ref in 6 games and all of the remainder have been uneventful apart from one disallowed goal and one penalty - both were definites so no arguements from anyone.

well done to your son! i bet that give him even more confidence that he can deal with such matters in the future. The grading probably reflected that he dealt with the troubles calmly and once they cooled down they reflected on the matter, that was nice of the parents at the end too. looks like you might have a budding professional premier referee on your hands there.

Having seen the stick Alex Ferguson dishes out, I am not so sure I would want him to be but then again I think it would probably make my son's day if he ever got to that stage!
