tarantinoed wrote:If you read a relatively short autobiographical book by Hemmingway called A Moveable Feast, it basically covers most of these characters and what links them together - Gertrude Stein's open house evenings for artists in Paris - in a very readable way. I read this book a long time ago and was knocked out by Hemmingway's honesty in it about how badly he eventually treated his wife of the time when he was a struggling writer in Paris with her and their newborn baby. It's a book full of the energy of youth and the sadness of regret - a beautiful read.

I also enjoyed Midnight in Paris and was surprised at what a good actor Owen Wilson is. I have to say, however, that increasingly Marian Cotillard just gets on my tits. Is it acceptable to say that? She was excellent as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose but since then just over does any role she has.
I will get that book as it looks like a lovely read and just spotted it http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... XMuCX5qX9g
Thanks so much for your very useful post o/

Absolutely adored this film from the scenery, the characters, the era, the clothes and of course music by Cole Porter (my Dad had an LP of his - so nostalgic as well). Went to Paris earlier this year and had the pleasure of going to The Palace of Versailles and to Musée d'Orsay so it really encaptured my memories from earlier in the year. 9/10 My favourite film of the year so far o/

the restaurant where he first met Hemingway was in my neighbourhood and is definitely one of my favourite in Paris ;)
(not for the food though, just for the atmosphere)

Thanks so much for that, it was lovely to read about the history of the place (took me forever to read it as I'm so slow  you amaze me with English being your second language, you really put me to shame  )
