I watched Andrew Niccol's underrated masterpiece "Gattaca". A thinking man's sci-fi but also a thoroughly compelling drama on the subject of genetic engineering and its potential effects. Despite the occasional plot hole (do they not use security cameras in the future?) it's a fantastic film which manages to achieve a lot even in its low budget.

Yeah, its very much underrated, its a great piece of Sci-fi. I've seen that film about 3 times now.



I just watched Shutter Island BR. Good mystery film but ultimately way too implausible even for me...Its a good p*y off in the end for a film that is completely devoid of any entertainment value. Imagery, surreal and suspense are the main ingredients here. DiCaprio is always a very assuring lead with a good supporting cast. I watched an extras feature which explains quite a bit on how if you watch it again, you can see everything falling into place as they show key clips. But its still OTT. 6/10. smart movie but not entertaining.

I watched the whole JK Rowling Leavesden evidence against the media. I also watched Hugh Grant and Steve Coogans evidence. All are justifiably damning of the press. But Rowling's one is truly horrifying and very numerous with much of the invasion involving her children. Yet she had the grace to also say, she is not out to bring the press down, there is very good journalism and they give us a great service and exercise in freedom of speech. But there needs to be a more powerful monitoring body than the very meek PCC to protect the privacy and safety of everyone from the gutter journalists/photographers. Steve Coogan was a bit all over the place with his evidence and very repetitive ignoring the more probing questions. HUgh Grant was very calm, well spoken and very clear. Jo was also very calm and the most compelling. The inquirer was also very good, playing both sympathetic and devils advocate at the same time. I like court case films, that's why this was quite intriguing for me

I would have personally boycott b*ying newspapers until there is a proper clamp down on the bad ethics of journalism but the ones I read are bloody free! I want to boycott them anyway! But then I need to read the news to know whats going on...damn it. At least boycott the pa*d ones, especially Mail, mirror, sun etc. Evening Standard was also very bad to JK. JK described them as cavalier, "you're a celebrity, you get whats coming to you".

I went to the HMVCurzon cinema in Wimbledon to watch Terrence Davies' film "Distant Voices, Still Lives" after hearing about it in Empire magazine. What a stunning film. Immaculate framing, brilliant acting and stark realism make the director's debut a wonderful yet woefully under-appreciated drama. The emphasis on music makes the film far more personal and unique. Quite astonishing.

I am 3 episodes into Band of Brothers now. I feel like I am living through a soldiers life, more so than in a two hour movie. Its all too realistic...but of course essential and incredibly compelling. Watching this series is perhaps the closest you can get to really feeling what being at war is like and in a way I am sure war veterans will appreciatr. I am watching a Blu ray boxset which include fascinating accounts by the real veterans that relates to each episode. Highly recommend getting yhis box set as it can be b*ght cheaply now.

I watched Made in Dagenham which I really enjoyed. Dont think it was OH's sort've thing tho, as he fell asleep!

Well i finally got round to watching The Orphanage and it definitely didn't disappoint great little film didn't mind the subtitles one bit well i never do that's no real surprise but what was a surprise was that i didn't even notice them well worth a watch would recommend this film to anyone

its on youtube in excellent quality at the mo, am up to episode 2. Very saccharine, very Spielsberg.


quick update - almost finished Game of Thrones. Wat a humdinger of a series. Not sure what I'm going to do to fill the gap...Merlin? Legend of the Seeker??!

Also started on the Prisoner remake. This is probably the most trippy tv I have ever watched. Intriguing, rather stupid, somewhat vacuous? - thats just some of the words I should use to describe myself for watching this wierd shit. hmmm...
