Re: Hugo
Here's my review of Hugo. http://wp.me/p1LZHn-aA
I wish I could love it more, but for all it's good intentions, it's a bit all over the place and I'm still stunned it ended up where it did.
The 3D is exceptional, though, but the ghosting bothered me. I'm just not certain if this is down to the film-making process or the projection process.

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Interesting (but very long!) review!
I shall see this then! Is it out this week?
(I hope I'll enjoy Paris' shots as much as I enjoyed the ones from Midnight in Paris)

Re: Hugo
Yep, released Friday.
It's a whole different feel compared to Midnight in Paris. This is far more ethereal.
And yeah, it was wordy. I tried to cut it back a bit, but clearly I need a proper editor =D

Re: Hugo
Thanks to hopeprince, I got to go to the Royal Premier of Hugo 3D at the Odeon Leicester Square.
We had to be in our seats by 7pm but as expected it was to make sure the entrance was cleared for when the Royal couple arrived. Before that we were shown a short promotional film about the CTBF, which organised tonight's premiere event. Then when Prince Charles and his wife turned up, they were introduced to the stars of the film and when they were seated, we all stood for the National Anthem, although one guy sat down as soon as the tune was played. After that, Sir Ben Kingsley came on to do the Loyal Address and introduced Martin Scorsese, the writers, Brian Selznick and John Logan, the actors, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Helen McCrory, Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield.
Film felt quite slow but it is absolutely beautiful and visually stunning, with a very heartwarming story. The 3D was brilliant and so was the cast, and Asa Butterfield's eyes are so expressive and mesmerising. I also loved all the different characters, despite their short screen time, there are snippets of stories there you really can warm to. A really lovely film. 8/10.

Re: Hugo
Saw this earlier at the Vue Westfield on the Xtreme screen.
Really loved this. It's not perfect and doesn't all work but as a study of the magical power of cinema I thought this was charming and beautifully told. I love the original book (if you've never read it, you really should, for Brian Selznick's wonderful illustrations alone) and found they managed to capture a lot of the magic of that. To be honest I always thought Martin Scorsese was the perfect choice for this considering his involvement with film preservation and love of cinema. Thankfully he stops it from becoming too dry and academic, even when getting into the specifics of film history.
Strong acting from all concerned too, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz both impressive. Though it was Ben Kingsley and Helen McCrory who gave the film real heart. Even Sacha Baron Cohen wasn't bad, obviously channelling Peter Sellers and Peter Cook. I also liked the small vignettes involving the people who worked in the station and felt that the time spent on those stories was perfect.
Sure there were elements that might go over the head of younger viewers but I think even they will be able to appreciate a film that looks at the wonder of cinema. I'm also pretty sure there are plenty of older viewers who wouldn't spot Django Reinhardt amongst the characters either.
For once the 3D was actually quite effective and enhanced the visuals rather than feeling redundant. There was the occasional ghosting but was mostly successful.
I thought this was wonderful (and I wasn't a big fan of the trailer) and would happily sit through it again. The film has real heart behind the 3D and I may have even got something in my eye on several occasions (thank god for the glasses).
Slightly worried beforehand though when I got in the cinema and saw a school group of about 30 9 or 10 year olds. I needn't have worried though. The teacher asked them if they could keep quiet during the film. Then added 'Don't even breathe!'. Now that's an approach to education I can get behind. Anyway they kept respectfully quiet and a couple of them even said they thought it was brilliant afterwards and another was having quite an animated discussion with his teacher about special effects. So if it get's kids talking about cinema that can only be a good thing.
