Re: The Iron Lady
A very moving film about a difficult subject. As someone who lived through those times, it brought back many memories. Stinking rubbish filling the streets, flying pickets, 3 day working week, power cuts, Thatcher the Milk Snatcher and so on and so forth.
Meryl Street blows everyone off the screen, most of the other cast were just there, much like the old Spitting Image puppets of the government - grey spineless men. The well known men in the cast, just looked like themselves impersonating the characters sadly, there again, its not about them its about her.
From the young idealistic girl to the married mother, to Prime Minister and frail old lady, you saw a side of her that one didn't know about. Jim Broadbent was great as Dennis who she relied on so much and missed greatly when he died. I though also that it was good that it wasn't about the Politics, it was about a woman.
I really hope it will get a audience and hopefully word of mouth will help it along as well
9/10
Great to see so many of us all together, far too many to remember, maybe about 20 all in all

I felt exactly the same, I found the old lady quite touching, she reminded a lot of my (alzheimer's sufferer) gran. I would have difficulties hating her after seeing this movie; for me she stands as a very strong woman who can't help but alienating her own people... but again I lived on the other of the channel at the time and did not have to endure everything the British had to go through during her era.weirdfilms33 wrote: and thus probably had the least exposure to Thatcher prior to seeing the film. As such I felt that the film put too much emphasis on the lady as an older woman and needed a lot more background on her political career.

Re: The Iron Lady
Fantastic. Meryl Streep was absolutely astonishing as both the younger and older versions and special mention to Tony Head and Jim Broadbent who were excellent too (and Harry Lloyds because he's hot). I thought that intertwining original news footage into the movie was very well done and added something extra to it (though it got quite brutal at times, but of course that was how it all went down). Growing up in the Netherlands I have not had extensive history lessons (or lived through) the Thatcher years so a lot of it was eye-opening too and the movie makes me want to seek out more information about this period in British history, it's very interesting.
8.5/10
The Falkland Islands bit made me think of Rock of Ages. "The Falkland Islands?" "Nice 80s political reference there."

Re: The Iron Lady
We thoroughly enjoyed it. Meryl Streep was excellent. If I closed my eyes and just listened to her voice, I'd have thought it was Mrs T.
However, I thought there was too much emphasis on what she sadly is now and not enough as Margaret the Magnificent :).
OH commented that it must be tough if you are dead and still being nagged.
One of the ushers asked me what I thought of it and even shook my hand, bless.

f**king brilliant. One of my faves for the year. Streep's performance exceeds the hype.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: The Iron Lady
I never hated Thatcher despite the fact she stole my milk in primary school. My father hated her. My mum thought she was so pretty (she has a questionable perception of beauty imo) and i just kept wondering why she stole my milk. But thankfully I have no dark cloud over my head to taint my enjoyment of the film. I imaging many will though and I understand. So that's where I stand with Thatcher.
This was such a beautifully made film, funny and very poignant. There is absolutely no question in my mind that Streep has sealed her umpteenth term in the greatest actress office. God, she was spellbinding. Like Thatcher with her male cabinet, Meryl Streep grabs her male co stars by the balls and roars "gentleman, I WILL get another Oscar". She will and she deserves it, there is no actress I can think of that can match her versatility and greatness. I could watch this again a couple more times just to absorb Streep's immaculate and nuanced performance. OK I must stop my love letter to Streep.
Admirably, this film really doesnt paint any biased view of Thatcher whatsoever. It neither glorifies or humiliate her, it just tells a very human story about a woman that happened to changed the face of Britain. No one can deny that Thatcher was always a lady of fierce conviction (hence the obvious nickname and title of the film). It was her asset and her downfall and that is what this is mainly about. All the political events occur in the background, the focus is always on the mind of Thatcher. But it also covers a great deal of her twilight years (I know she is still with us but I think I can still say that, cant I?) which is both funny and sad.
Oh and the supporting cast are great, particularly the ever reliable Jim Broadbent but they are so tiny compared to...ok, I said I wont mention Streep again...but you know...she is the greatest....ever...
