biggins wrote:I really liked this film. When I read it was 146 minutes I thought it would be far too long but the time passed very quickly and although it started off a bit slow soon got into the story. Some humorous moments and some very sad but a film I would recommend seeing.
Odeon at Westerhailes was full and there was a few blowing noses and sniffing towards the end.
The goose was funny too and thought we would see it again at the end -but maybe Octopus has snatched it for her foie gras for Xmas.

10/10 from me.
I too absolutely loved this film totally agree with everything that you have said. I was reduced to tears it was so moving, my favourite film of 2011. 10/10 (my one and only of 2011)
Lovely to see akh43 and yogi again.

We do keep saying that we are not always going to like the same films. That's to be expected!
It's not a case of "I like it so everyone must like it". All comments are valid surely?
Rejoice in our differences!
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston

Saw this in a packed Wester Hailes This morning. Best film of the year and what a weay for the year to bow out. Might even p*y and go and see it again.
Great acting, some humour and the trench scene very touching and the pointless waste of life not forgotten either. Will be recommending this to friends.
Nice to see Biggins and Having a Screen too.
11/10 from us as beats the two other 10/10 films this year

MGellatly wrote:Went to Braehead (80% full) this morning. I loved the film. I was totally engrossed in the fortunes of the horse (Joey) and the people who "owned" him over the years. Joey was fabulous and if there was an Oscar for the best animal he would win it hoof down!
Better than the dog in The Artist? I'm not sure about that.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. The trailer made it looked like classic heart string tugging Oscar bait and in a way it is, but the story makes it feel like a number of short stories so it seems shorter than it's long running time, it looks fantastic and there's some lovely moments and the duck gives the horse a run for it's money for beat animal performance.
The horses' tale didn't really get me emotionally, but I thought the scene in no man land was absolutely suberb
Seen at a packed Cardiff Odeon on Sunday, had a visitor over who went to see it with us who hadn't been to the cinema in about 15 years. There were laughs, sighs groans and a few tears. I knew this was going to be a sentimental film as I read reviews prior to going but still fell under its spell.
Cinematography was beautiful, the scenes of the war outstanding.
I only wish the stories of Emily, the other officer who survivedcould have had a little more development
.
I really enjoyed the film and will have a search as to how many 'joeys' were used, .....ok it was 14 from foal to adult.
10/10

Totally agree MM, what a fantastic film to see the year out with. The animal characters were brilliant, so touching to see how the horses interacted, even the rats got in on the action. My teen loved the way the story followed all the teens experiences, a very different take on your usual war movie. Speilberg did a stunning job with the sets and metaphors, especially the empty horsebacks, the Somme scene and amazing skys.
Lovely to see you and Biggins too, good to have had that discussion biggins

, made me feel much better, thanks.
10/10 from me

To everyone giving this tens...
Did the whole tank scene really not bother you? Why ever would that tank be heading in the horses' direction? There was no place for the tank to go, as illustrated by the horses having nowhere to run. Are we really meant to believe this was some crazy, horse slaughtering tank? Or was the tank meant to be out of control? If so, how/why? This is a pretty major point as the scene is used to create a supposedly sad scene as Joey's pal is run down, but it's so hilariously pointless that all I could do was roll my eyes.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

The film is fiction and should be watched as this . . . . it's not meant to be a war documentary.

Oh come now... surely, the same could be said of any gaping plot hole in any film then.

As a big fan of the stage version I found this fairly disappointing. I do think there are good things about it though but it should have been so much better. An excess of sentimentality doesn't help and some contrivances and implausibilities that the play got away with seem less forgivable on the big screen.
