Goon

#1 Post by Ms Thrifty » Fri Dec 23, 2011 5:53 am

This film seems to have sneaked up on me as I'd never even heard of it (and cannot find anything on here) until I saw some posters yesterday, but it scores 8.3 on IMDB and is out soon (6 Jan). Another sporting film...

"Labelled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way."

Maybe the idea is that when the weather is too poor for participating in sport, people will want to watch a film about it instead? I'll certainly give it a go, based on the ratings alone.

I'm a huge fan of Jay Baruchel, who is a co-star and co-writer, and Seann William Scott, who is the film's lead, so I guess add in ice hockey, the best sport, and I was meant to love this film, yet I was surprised at just how brutal the film can be in between bouts of absolute hysterics, and a magnificent lead performance by Scott, who manages to play the loveable stupid guy with an ability to smash people real hard too. It's very Canadian in that sense.

I've not been to a comedy where an entire room of press look away, gasping in horror during a pretty tough, intense scene, but it's striking at how well this works with the film, which is a pretty dark comedy. I'd definitely say it's a must-see, in fact it snuck in to my top 10 of the year last week, but your enjoyment of it varies on how much you can handle in terms of violence.

Gosh, this doesn't sound at all what I was expecting. I'd say I liked Seann William Scott, except that I don't recall seeing him in anything since the American Pie series. Well I can always look away when it gets rough!

I caught a trailer. It doesn't look promising, but at least it's a new film!

Well I'm still game, no pun intended. Time Out has given it 3 stars and the rating on IMDB is respectable enough. At 92 minutes it won't be the end of the world if it doesn't end up in my best of 2012; at present I just need to see something, somewhere, soon!

I'm a huge fan of Jay Baruchel and Marc Andre Grondin (star of the French Canadian film C.R.A.Z.Y) so I really REALLY want to see this! Are they doing free screenings?
